dBA (interior noise)

When Road & Track tested the Ameritech McLaren F1 they got 95 dBA.(interior noise, maximum in 1st gear)

Is there any other mags that got more than 95 dBA with the F1?

Just to compare , the Ferrari F50 got:
101 dBA in Road & Track
104 dBA in Car & Driver

What do you think the F1 LM (003) could acheive? more than 100 dBA thats for sure.

The LM is so loud it is impossible to hear the person next to you, that is why it ships with headsets and built-in microphones for all three passengers.

Re: dBA (interior noise)

I understand that they are noise-cancelling so that they only pick up a minimal amount of the ambient wind and engine noises. So, how effective are the headsets and microphones? Do people come through, loud and clear, without a lot of background noise?

A very Happy New Year to everyone.

Hello Mr Selldorff.

Nice to know you still here i was woundering with the LM having watched one of the vids how much of the noise is from those strate cut gears and at what point does enginge scream take over transmission whine. Does the gearbox noise become anoying or simpily remind you of the competition nature of the car you in? I remember reading that the CLK GTR engine noise was almost always drawned out by an irritating transmission whine. As a side note have you ever had the chance to compaire LM with CLK GTR i for one would love to know how they stack up? Sorry for all the questions and i do try to spell and puncuate correctily but well err......

Many thanks.

Re: dBA (interior noise)

i never took the headsets out of their new packaging. no idea how ell they work. the transmission whine is significant, but the engine noise can still be appreciated over it.

Re: dBA (interior noise)

Welcome back. I'm just curious about something. A lot of the interior on the LM is suede correct? Well, just like the E30 M3 sport evo, where the steering wheel is suede, does it get worn down when you use it a lot and become, kinda smooth and shiny? I hope you understand what i mean...

Hi Mr Selldorff- Good to see that you still take the time to check in here.

I've always been kind of curious about the noises from inside an F1. Not just the sounds from the engine or transmission, but the sounds of rocks coming off the tires that hit the carbon fiber underbody at low speeds and also windnoise at high speed? How much of either do you hear? At what speed does the windnoise really start to impede if at all.

In one experience of mine in a '96 911 Turbo, the rush of the wind noise really began to overwhelm all other sounds at about 160mph, and by about 180 mph the doors were starting to get sucked out a bit around the window frames causing the rush of wind noise to get even louder.

Do you experience anything like that in the F1 at high speeds? I suspect in the effort to save weight that the F1 doesn't have a lot of sound deadening built in. Do the doors seal up fairly well - there doesn't seem to be much weather stripping around the seams of the doors.

this is a tougher question to answer than you might think. at serious speed, obviously, i am not concentrating on the sounds but on the road. the most significant sound is not wind noise, but the sucking sound in the air intake above your head and behind. the car is very airtight and solid, no movement in the doors or windows due to air pressure. it is a problem, however, driving above about 40 mph with one window open. an uncomfortable and significant amount of air pressure builds up inside. this can be alleviated by cracking the opposite window.

Re: dBA (interior noise)

no but there was a specific sport exhaust option, and it had a name, it was called the goodwood exhaust sytem, i found it on the forums (link: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...hlight=exhaust )

mr Selldorff can you get any details on that besides it being a factory option at some part?
