need some advice
hey guys, i just got back from trying a 1993 vr4. and i have a question. the car is a '93, has 145,000 miles on it, and the guy is only asking $5500 for it. the car started up fine, idled well and sounded pretty good. but when the car was floored and the turbos were boosting, it didn't sound all that smooth. the turbos seemed to be kind of tweetering or something. now, is this normal? 'cause i've ridden in turbo'd cars before and the turbo always sounded smooth, but these were only single turbo cars, never twin... i don't know if this is a normal twin turbo thing or not. if you guys could help me out that would be great. thanks

Re: need some advice
I don't know what you mean by tweetering...does it sound like they are spooling, like you can hear them start to spin more and the air flow...
Was teh acceleration under boost smooth or did it jerk or hesitate back and forth? I'd take it to a mechanic you trust and have them check it out. With that many miles, it is a possibility that the turbos may need to be rebuilt. Ask if it leaks any oil, and watch for blue smoke out the exhaust, have someone follow you when you testdrive it, if they see excessive blue smoke out of your exhaust.

hmmm, they should not be "tweetering" or whatever but i am not sure exactly what your problem might be. did the car seem to hesitate and lose power under full throttle? if so maybe it is just spark blowout that could be fixed by cleaning the plugs or regapping them or getting new ones. no big deal.
the 93 is a great year for these cars though so i would give it a shot. even if the turbos are going out (which could be the case) they are not all that expensive to rebuild or replace (or upgrade ). things that i would be more concerned about are things like smooth shifting through the gears, no smoke out of the exhaust, no oil leaks, and good compression on all cylinders.

Re: need some advice
everything felt smooth but didn't sound smooth. it sounded it like it was going on and off real quickly, like hitting full boost then back off a bit, then hitting full boost and backing off a bit. other than that it sounded fine. the guy was saying it was just a normal twin turbo thing

Re: need some advice
Not a normal twin turbo thing...from what you describe that sounds like spark blowout occuring. But I don't know that you would hear it as much as feeling it.

could be the spark plugs getting blown out like someone said...plugs need to be changed anyways since it has been sitting. could be as simple as the plug being misgapped...
but when you first described the problem was thinking new turbo's...ceased, way too much shaft play, etc. either way, it would still be worth the money. does it seem to be missing power??? try to get out of him why he is selling it so cheap without asking "why are you selling it so cheap??"

Re: need some advice
well he was selling it for another guy. and the guy didn't wanna sell it for too much, and it needs a paint job, but other than that it seemed fine. the guy who was selling kept on saying that he'd paint it, but a body kit and make it look nicer and sell it for 10 grand
