Towing question, 1991 Astro 2wd
Ok so I have a Safari but I still say its an Astro. I have 91 astro. Bought it to haul family around. The thing is great.
My question is about towing. I see full size trucks with 4.3L V6 motors pulling 16ft car trailers with mid size autos ont he trailer a lot. Can the Astro van handle this? I wont be buying a full size truck til next summer but I need to tow now. Most towing would be local. Not to much highway. My friend tows with his all the time but he has installed a 350 TPI motor in his. Not an option right now. But my guess is if he can stop the thing then he is ok. Anyone else tow a car hauler? I have electric brakes on my trailer which help a lot. Opinions please. |

Re: Towing question, 1991 Astro 2wd
I guess it just depends on how much weight your going to be hauling. I'm not sure of the GVW on these things, but I have a 1992 2WD and towed a loaded pop-up (ok, so it doesn't weight as much as a car trailer) for about 9 years and never had any engine trouble at all. Just recently replaced the tranny this year, so the van has done excellent. I'd say just check the GVW and find out how much you'll be hauling.

I believe the towing capacity for the Astro's is around 4300lbs. I also tow a pop up trailer, gross weight of 1680lbs, once loaded with luggage, bikes and stuff it is probably over 2000lbs, and the van pulls that no problem, like you don't even know there is extra weight back there.
