1993 GMC Vandura will not start

My van is rarley used, it has only 47000 miles mainly long trip miles, My problem started with the Engine not starting after it had been running and then shut off for a while. Now it will not start without using starting fluid. Sometimes it would start after a few short clicks on the starter. Once started the Van runs great. I do not hear the fuel pump come on when the key is turned on. After I start the engine if I pull the fuel pump fuse the Engine will stop running. Does anyone have any help for me. I have taken it to a mechanic and he changed the fuel pump but no help.
The "Check Engine Soon" light comes on. If the Engine will start the first try then the "Check Engine Soon" light does not stay on.
