92 ford explorer (bad oil pump or pickup screen?)
I tried out a Ford Explorer to buy. It ran good and was very quiet. After about 1 mile it lost oil pressure and the lifters started clakking.
Could the oil pump have gone bad or the pickup screen blocked? Is it hard to change a oil pump on this vehicle. It is a 4.0. The dealer said he would knock $900.00 off the asking price of $1900.00. |

Re: 92 ford explorer (bad oil pump or pickup screen?)
Oil pump aww that would be a 7 out of a 10 scale.
Its up under your oil pan, so you have to remove that ect, if u were to do this i would say you need a lift, so you can have room to work. Hope THat helps! |

Well in order to get the oil pan off on the 92 you have to remove the engine out of the car wich is quite a pain. 900 seems like alot but if you were really interested in buying the explorer I would shoot for 1300 off the asking price. Removing the enging means unhooking absolutley everrything off of it, tranny headers, hoses, lines etc etc. Im guessing it would take 2-3 days to do it if you were to do it yourself. I took my engine out to rebuild it myself and it took a few days. Another thing about the ol pump I remember on mine that it was controlled by a driveshaft and I couldnt see how the pump could really fail. This is what my haynes manual says about low oil pressure. Im not going to compy it but here is what it says reworded by me. Low oil pressure can be a sign of an engine that needs to be rebuilt. When the gauge comes on in the car indicating low oil pressure its only like a warning light. TO test the oil pressure you need to do it with a mechanical gauge. Anyway I hope this helps. Good luck.

Explorer Fixed.
Thanks for all the help out there. We bought the Explorer and found out because it was sitting for almost two years that the oil pickup screen was being blocked with sluge. Put in a new pump and cleaned the screen and now runs great. Thanks Again, Willard
