Ghia. Start/tune/run

I have a 73 Ghia which starts fine and then kills as soon as it gets
warmed up. New plugs, plug wires, points and tried to clean the carb. It
even kills when I give it gas once it is warmed up. When it is warm I
cannot get it started until it cools down again. I have tried to set the
timing but I cannot get it to run long enough to let it get down to idle
speed.

Another question about setting the timing. Manual says 5° BTDC but
there is only one mark on the pulley. As near as I can determine this is
where the timing should be set once it warms up. The alternative is to
estimate 5°. Also one manual says disconnect the vacuum lines from the
distributor and the other manual says leave them in place. I have the
distributor with the two vacuum lines on the distributor.

Any words of wisdom?

Thanks: Gordon

Re: Ghia. Start/tune/run

If that is the '73 pulley the notch actually indicates 5 Degrees ATDC. The timing should be checked with the vacuum hoses connected. If you want to set it to that mark you really need to be sure both the advance & retard diaphrams in the distributor are working as they commonly fail. The idle problem sounds like the carburetor. There is an electric idle solenoid & an idle jet you should check. If you pull the wire to the solenoid (key on) you should hear it click. The idle jet is on the right side of the carb, just above the alternator, it is a brassscrew. Pull it & blow it out with compressed air. Did you correctly gap the plugs before installing?
