newbie ? on fuel grade

just bought a 2003 1.8T jetta... says on the fuel door preiumn fuel only.. is this true? salesman told me 87 octane was just fine

1. The octane rating for premium gas varies across the country.
2. Never believe a salesman
3. Check your owners manual, it suggests minimum octane rating.
