94 Dodge Caravan electrical problems

When we're driving on the road, our Caravan thinks that the driver's side door is open, so it chimes, then it registers that the door is closed, and locks the doors. It keeps doing this over and over. It's especially annoying at night when the dome light goes on and off when it thinks the door is open. It seems to do this when we turn right as well as when we go over bumps. Sometimes it does it when we turn on the turn signal. There's no rhyme or reason and it isn't consistent.

Today it even stalled out on us when we were driving. No warning at all... just stopped. The chiming happens at all times, cold and warm. The car stalled out when it is warm.

Any ideas what we need to do to fix this?

Thanks.

Re: 94 Dodge Caravan electrical problems

A common problem with these mini-vans. The door fails to push in the door switch completely.

Simple fix: Put a square of 3M sponge mounting tape on the door so as it contacts the switch. It will push the door switch in a tad more making all the difference.

Re: Re: 94 Dodge Caravan electrical problems

I had exactly the same problem with my 97 plymouth grand voyager se, i.e., pilot light for doors would go on and off of it's own accord, door locks would keep on activating while the van was moving and the cabin lights would go on in tune with the rest of the crazyness. I did as suggested and voila everything is back to normal. Thanks a lot Yogi.
