90 Jetta GLI Idle?

I recently picked up a 90 Jetta Gli 16V and it starts and seems to run good except an awkward idle. im not familar with VW but it starts then the idle will jump, almost like pulsate, up, down, up, down, fairly quick.
Im learning that vacuum, and electric sensors play a large roll in the running gear for these vehicles. any help would be greatly appreciated.
