Question 96 Grand Am GT 3.1 starts then stalls immediately

I start the car, it runs fine for 1-2 seconds, then stalls. It won't go at all. Starts perfectly every time, I can hear the fuel pump run normally, and when it runs for those few seconds....it sounds fine...it will not continue running at all. No sputtering or anything. There were no warning signs. Just one day, I went to go somewhere, and it began to do this. There are normal lights on, nothing flashing.
On a side note, the past week before this, the lights on the shifter have been acting up. I don't see any relation to the problem, but I figured I'd throw it out there.

Any help would be appriciated alot.

My Fiancee's Car Is Doing The Same Thing. There's Also A Gas Leak From A Small Hose Coming Off Of The Throttle Body, Where The Hose Connects Up Near The Engine. Taking It To The Shop Today. I'll Write Later When It's Fixed.

Re: 96 Grand Am GT 3.1 starts then stalls immediately

Mine just got towed to my uncle's car lot for repair sometime this week or early next week. My dad got it running once, but all the idiot lights stayed on. It ran fine till he turned it off and tried it again. Nothing. The only mechanics I have talked to(they have not actually been here) said it sounded like something electronic....most likely in the ignition/key area and possibly the anti theft acting up. We'll see soon. Thanks for your reply, maybe it will help me.

Verdict is in - problem w/ 96 ga was the fuel pressure regulator. Leaky, probably losing prime. I believe there was a recall for some fuel related problem with the 96 grand ams. definite fire hazard.

Re: 96 Grand Am GT 3.1 starts then stalls immediately

Well, mine got fixed yesterday as well. Quite different results though. The mech. was checking out the 'puter and couldn't access certain things. Luckily, he had come across the problem before. My car had gotten wet after the hurricanes came thru and flooded the area(not flooded, just got the floors wet). the moisture was still not all out of the car I guess, and had gotten to the airbag module(under the seat) and it was shorting out.....evidently messing up other electronics somehow. They unhooked it(It wasn't working anyhow), and now it is fine. 30$ is all it cost too.

Thanks everyone. Hope this helps someone else. Oh, and if GM is reading this.....fix your damn electronics please.
