2000 Golf battery drain through A/C compressor clutch
My 2000 Golf (2.0L manual transmission) came up with a dead battery one day. After having the battery and alternator checked, I noticed the A/C clutch was engaged at all times. I disconnected the battery and hooked up my trickle charger directly to the cables and found the clucth immediately engaged and the meter on the battery charger indicated a 4 ampere load. Has anyone heard of this happening and got an idea where to start? I would appreciate any suggestions.

Well let me tell you what I found... I went to the library and found the wiring diagrams in their reference section. After a few checks I found the wire bundle leading to the Cooling Fan Control Module was fairly warm. When I pulled the fuse for this module, the compressor clutch disengaged and the meter on the battery charger dropped to nearly 0 amperes. My local auto parts store couldn't help me but suggested I contact the Campbell-Nelson wrecking yard in Arlington. They had one and even guaranteed it for six months! Seventy dollars later I was on the road
