dude, your only 16, give it a few years before you start trying to make more power. don't mean to be a dick, but trust me I've seen what young kids with fast cars do. Even if you say your not, your gonna and you know it.

Re: how do i get more power out of my 86' 305 4bbl???

fuels filters are as important on carbed engines than they are on EFI. they make efi do some wierd stuff when they are in bad shape but carbs use alot lower pressure so it doesnt seem to be a big deal.

I would look at something like a catback exhaust if you already have headers?

Re: how do i get more power out of my 86' 305 4bbl???

well, i agree with 92RS, i started driving on an old olds, moved up to the 89RS camaro, and then got the 89IROC as i got to be a better driver, but thats between you and your parents to decide, not us. especially if you paid for your own car.

So with that being said. The key to making power on any small block chevy is the heads and cam. the factory heads are pretty much trash, at least to most of us, im sure 92RS has something to say about that As far as the heads, i only know of two affordable options, a set of World Products SR Torquers for a 305, or a set of vortec heads. the chambers on the vortecs are larger, and will lower compression a bit, but if you use steel shim gaskets, it should minimise this, and also you can have the vortecs milled up to .04 inches to decrease combustion chamber volume. but id do that as a last resort. Personally i would go with a set of vortecs, because they will flow much more air. The important thing to remember is that you have to keep the 1.94/1.5in valves because of the 305 blocks small bore size. To compliment these heads, i would get a dual pattern compcams xtream energy cam, given your otherwise stock setup, and your young age (hate to be a downer) i wouldnt go to radical here, stay below .5in of lift, i would reccomend a XE262H or smaller cam.

another place to focus, is to rebuild the carb, its seen alot of miles, and a carb needs a tuneup just as much as an engine does. having it freshened up and retuned, especially if you are modding the engine, will probly give you the biggest change in driveability, performance, and mileage.

Buy a 500-600 cfm edelbrock or holley carb and intake manifold. New plugs, wires, distributer cap and ignition mod. advance the timing unless it's alright. Does it have a posi rear end? if not find one.

Too tell u the truth I think the guys r right u don't need 2 much hp yet.But because u r into maros I'll help u. Lets see get a MSD 6al ignition and a 50,000 volt coil it will help your spark alot, plus it has a rev control (to keep u from blowin your motor when u show out in front of the girls, and i know u will hee hee ). A good catback maybe some gears in the rear end,and an eaton posi unit. You are really going to need a good carb, and heads and cam like 89iroc said maybe a compcams high energy (218/218 with .454 int lift &.454 exh lift. And to save money a set of vortec heads they flow alright. But you r gonig to have 2 freshin up the bottomend, with rings rod bearings and oil pump. And put a shift kit in the trans and buy a ratchet shifter so u wont miss a gear. SO thats all I think u need for now and good luck.

welcome to AF, but comeon man, the Camaro people already have a reputation for being the long haired hippie mullet red-neck group.

Lets try to at least make it look like we have taken an english class and somewhat paid attention to it. (that is why the min. age is 13) AF has enough ghetto talking "street slang" that we are trying to get rid of.

Thanks

Re: how do i get more power out of my 86' 305 4bbl???

buy a motor rebuild kit and get your 305 to become a 350! Always helps with power, that or throw in a crate motor with an upgraded fuel system! (This is only if you have the money and the knowledge) otherwise Do what they said ^^

Re: how do i get more power out of my 86' 305 4bbl???

um, you cant turn a 305 with a 350, especially with a rebuild kit, you would have to bore it out from a 3.736in bore to a 4in bore. but you cant do that due to the placement of water jackets in the 305 block. only way to "turn" a 305 into a 350, is to turn the 305 into a boat ancher, and replace it with a 350 block.
