I would go with the Comp Cams XE262H...Pontiacs build great low end torque...get something thats gonna help it in the mid range...and what gears you running...3.55's?....stay with the Rochester carb for now..they flow 800cfm...I would also suggest that you put a good shift kit in the trans (im assuming it's an auto)....jump the timing up to 10-12 degrees...you may want to put a set of lighter springs in the distributor...to let it advance the timing a little faster...just some ideas to think about...hope it helps

Re: New parts..
Sounds like you're on the right track. A lot of guys make the mistake of going with a huge cam, when they really won't use it. I've had several Comp Cams, and as long as they are broken in correctly they won't give you any heartache. Don't forget how cams and intakes change your engine vacuum, and how this relates to whats getting to your vacuum advance horn. Actually, I would suggest if you're going to do any Distributer Spring/Recurve work, take your car to a local Dyno shop. For a couple hundred bucks, they will get the most out of your carb, and distributer. Good Luck.

Re: New parts..
72,
Lethal429 is right. XE250H (the one you laid out the specs for) is a baby. In a 400, it will make gobs of low-end, but will run out of breath around 4,500. XE262H is the cam of choice for those building "stockish" GTOs. It offers a similar idle as the 068 (factory "HO" cam), but makes better vacuum and will rev to 6,000, no sweat. No offense to macktoshcool, but understand that Pontiac engines are different, and enjoy some very unique performance qualities, especially at RPM ranges under 6,000. Camming a Pontiac is not the same as camming a Ford or Chevy. If you're looking for a cam with 'attitude", yet still reasonable on the street, consider XE274H. It is parametrically similar to the 041 (Ram Air IV) cam, but offers the same advantages of other XE cams. You would need a 2,400 RPM converter for that cam. Have you bought the book, as I have previousl;y suggested? Nobody knows Pontiacs better than the Pontiac "family", and Jim Hand could be considered one of the current "patriarchs". |

Re: New parts..
Well, I guess i baught a baby cam.. But hey its something its like i told you before i do not want a " Hi Performance " engine..
I am 17 just got this gto which is needing to be redone so im doing some stuff to the engine to give me a little bit of performance but not much.. Ya maybe when im a little older and this car is done with body and interior i will go " Hi Performance " Right now I just want to hit around 300 to no more than 350 horse and doesnt matter how much torque but would like a how amount.. I just want a nice good looking semi fast old car.. My dad is buying me new Hooker Competition Headers.. Not Super Competition.. So like i said i just dont wanna go hi performance but i do wanna get some stock valvetrain parts out of there.. I should be buying some new Magnum Roller Rocker Arms soon with new pushrods.. |

Re: New parts..
72, it wasn't to make fun of you, so don't take it like that. If you haven't installed the cam yet, SEND IT BACK. You won't be happy with it. It's actually smaller than the cam that Pontiac put in there. There's no price difference between the two. The XE262H is a mild-mannered, smooth idle cam. As I said, we use it in "stockers". That is, engines where the owner wants the engine to sound and "act" stock. It's not TOO "high performance". It will work with all the stock valve train.
If you have already installed it, you're gonna have to use it. BUT... If you used the Comp timing set (2112 or 3112), go back in and set the cam to 4 degrees retarded. This will raise the power band a bit, and not give you such a big low-end "hit". If you buy the Magnum rockers, stick with the 1.52:1 ratio. There are modifications necessary to the heads if you use the 1.65:1s. I'm sure you've heard it before, but "trust me on this one". Pontiacs are my main thing, and as it happens, my main business. About 60 percent of the engines we build here are Pontiacs (not Chevys with "Pontiac" heads on them, but REAL Pontiacs, like the one in your GTO). Best of luck, whatever you decide. Feel free to e-mail me about any specific questions you may have. [email protected] |
