Loud grinding/rattling noise in my olds 88 (-90)

I recently went on a 2 hr car trip, and when my car hits ~65mph or so, it starts shaking really bad. I usually ignore it, or try to stay at a lower speed. The day after I got back, I went to drive it, and it started making a very loud grinding noise. It happens even when it's in neutral and I press the gas. It seems to be coming from the right side of the engine (if you sit behind the wheel). It also seems to "move with the engine" - if I accelerate, it goes faster etc. Does anyone know what this might be? I've been thinking that it might have something to do with the waterpump or the power steering (it's sounds like it's coming from the waterpump), but my boyfriend says it's more likely to be something with the belts? I would really appreciate any help!!!

Thanks!

did the rattling sound like pennies rattling in a tin can? i had a 90' delta (well i still do it just sits dying in my driveway)but i had a noise from around the front right wheel...it sounded like pennies in a tin can. my car also kinda shook and it also would kind of loose steering...(my dad drove it once and thought he was gonna die) but anyways i was told it was the waterpump or the power steering bearings from the the pulley on the driveshaft. what i would do is get a lenth of hose, put it up to your ear, and run the other end all along the serpentine belt (if you have long hair i wouldnt recomend using to short of a hose) and the pulley where the noise is the loudest...chances are its that one. good luck.

Thanks a lot!! I will check that out. I have noticed loss of steering also, so it sounds just like what you describe.

Have a great day!
