I have a automatic 1991 740 gle automatic, anyone know if the turbo from the turbo version 740 will bolt right on to my engine? Is it the same engine? And will any other work be required to install it if it will fit?

Re: 1991 740 turbo?

Itll bolt on, but with higher compression in the non turbo car, you will have to keep the boost lower, and or run very high octane. I have seen it done though, and the guy said he didnt have many problems. Research it fully though before you make a descision.... a V8 would fit nicely in that old brick.... www.brickboard.com www.turbobricks.com

Re: 1991 740 turbo?

The other items to check on too; intrcooler, fuel injectors, fuel pressure, pump, regulator, ignition timing, spark plugs heat range, main CPU, oil and water connections to and from turbo and one thing I remember when I bought my 89 turbo is that there is no vacuum, the intake manifold becomes pressurized under boost and there goes your vacuum. They put some kind of a pump on my car when the dealer added the factory cruise control. You may want to check that out along with the vacuum lines to the power brake booster too.
It may be better to sell the car and buy a turbo 740 or 940. You may end up shortening the life expectancy of your motor because you'll love putting your foot in to it once you feel the turbos KICK!

It will bolt on EXCEPT, there is no oil return hole in the non-turbo blocks. This is a real PITA to drill and install, but not immposible.

Early 740Turbo's (up to 1987 or 1988) used a vacuum pump but all later models just used a vacuum resivour with a one way valve, their was enough vacuumn created by the engine during deceleration and idle to supply all the accessories.
