Engine Source???

My daughter's 86.5 Supra has spun a bearing or something. The engine has like 190,000 miles on it.

Do we rebuild? or try to locate one in a junkyard? or buy one off the internet?

You have all probably discussed this many times over, but I'm asking again anyway . . .

To buy one from whatever source, what would I expect to have to pay for one, or

How much to rebuild?

Thanks,

Tom

It's your personal choice really, there are only two options I would pick...
- low milage imported JDM engine, should cost around $700
- rebuild the current 7m-ge, a full rebuild should cost around $1K
I wouldn't buy an engine here since there most likely going to be in the same condition that your's is now. Since she is driving an MKIII she should be keeping up with the maintanence on it, checking the oil everytime she fills it up with gas or everytime she takes it out especially. Low oil kills the 7m, it only takes one time to get rod-knock. Anyway about the engine's, a full rebuild will be the "best" choice but n/a's last a very long time so I would go with the JDM engine, it's cheaper and you'll probably get the same life out of it. Here are some places to look with good reputations, especially jarco...

Re: Engine Source???

Are the engines from Japan the same as what's in her car? I mean, I know the original engine came from Japan, but is another one a "plug-n-play?"

As far as rebuilding, is that $1K having it done, or for parts and machine work do-it-yourself? [I have rebuilt about 3 engines (that actually ran!) but that was 20+ years ago.]

Thanks for your information/wisdom.

Re: Engine Source???

Speaking of "same engine" was the 7m-ge used in anything beside the Supra. (This one is an 86.5 Supra we're trying to get going here.)

Thanks . . .

Re: Engine Source???

In North America it was also used in the 89+ Cressida as well as the 86.5-92 Supra.
