Code P040?
Went to autozone and it came up the EGR codes....The guy at autozone said that if i was going to have the egr takening off and i might as well replace the whole thing because if the wrong part is replaced, then it will have to taken apart again, plus the whole assembly would be done. He also said that having my conical air filter instead of the normal box one would have had no effect on the egr. So any info from people who have had this problem and how it was fixed would help! My friend that came with me said his sisters Beretta had the same problem, but once it was replaced the light still came back on? Should I just go to the junk yard and take one off another contour and switch it to see if the light goes off first? And what the heck does the EGR do? All i know is that it stands for exhaust gas recircilation...

The EGR is basically just an emissions deal. It recirculates the unburned fuel for better gas mileage.
You may want to try cleaning the EGR before replacing it. Heres a how-to that was posted on contour.org. click me

Re: Code P040?
You know what! Remember how I said my gas mileage was really bad and I have been wonder if it was my air intake? I bet it has been the EGR valve all along! ha! Thanks man!

Re: Code P040?
Guys I have lost all faith in my Advanced Auto Store...I went there tonight to order a new throttle body gasket, and when I went in I told the man at the counter I needed a rubber gasket for the throttle body. We did the whole what car is it thing that takes 10 seconds on there computer. Then he asks me So you what a rubber gasket that goes on the throttle body? you mean a head gasket? I think I almost died at this point. So I explained to him there is a throttle body gasket that is between the throttle body and the manifold...I think I lost him. It ends up he said I think it is the air intake gasket. Which for one reason or another was priced at 74.99 on his computer screen. I don't even think he still had it on the contour at that point either. I really think I'm gonna go to the ford dealership soon just so I know i'm talking to a semi intelligent person..
But! the good news (I think) when I went to pull from advanced auto the engine wasn't on. I think my car has issues...I might get the gasket and check the egr anyway. I still wonder if that would be the cost of my poor gas mileage. |

Unless Ford has revised or changed the throttle body gasket, it should be a soft aluminum gasket.
