got z rated tires is this why i get wheel hop cause of the grip? i just drove my friends stock eclipse and the tires spun instead of hopping. also mine are 19" rims. how much does that mess with my low end compared to stock 16" thanks guys

I dunno about the Z-rating affecting wheel hop, I thought that usually meant something about your suspension. As for 19's affecting your low end torque, yes, very much so. This is why most ppl reccomend not to get over 17" wheels. The onlt way you can get the same amount of low end torque out of 19's is to either A: Regear Transmission, B:Get alot of horsepower, or C: just get 17s (I use 225/45/17)

It does have some to do with the tires, but the tires didnt cause it, they just made you notice it. Yeah, i would drop down a couple sizes, but there is stuff that will help stop the hop!
stiffer engine and tranny mounts
strut bar
stiffer springs
lowering the car

I would look into some urethane engine mounts and a BETTER strut bar if you already have one, like one that doesnt have adjustable pieces or that bolts to the firewall too. If you dont already have one, try the $20 ebay one first, cant hurt. If you do change the wheels, the lighter the better!

Re: tire hop

a strut bar should help a little, but the engine mounts should make the most difference, in DSMs i think most of the wheel hop comes from chassis twist and flex so an X brace for the bottom of the car would probably make a big difference too.

Re: tire hop

does an lsd make a huge difference also since your right tire spins faster than your left. i too have this problem but only when its hot outside or on certain pavements/roads. well if motor mounts will help, since my car is in the shop, should i get better mounts put on now and what kind and so forth?

Re: tire hop

urethane motor mount inserts and an LSD should cure the problem to a noticable degree. Search for a detailed explanation on what causes wheel-hop...and how dangerous it can be for your car... launch techniques also help ease hop. search search search!

Just to clarify, the rating is a speed rating.

"When Z-speed rated tires were first introduced, they were thought to reflect the highest tire speed rating that would ever be required, in excess of 240 km/h or 149 mph. While Z-speed rated tires are capable of speeds in excess of 149 mph, how far above 149 mph was not identified. That ultimately caused the automotive industry to add W- and Y-speed ratings to identify the tires that meet the needs of new vehicles that have extremely high top-speed capabilities."

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete...eral/speed.jsp <--this is a good short article that explains the rating system.
