turbo my civic
hey, i got a auto 94 civic sedan d16 vtec.
i want to get extra power for my car with out swapping the engine. and i will not convert my auto to manual. now, i got already a exhaust system, and short ram intake. my friend said that he can get for 200 australian dollars a turbo for my car which will be give around 30 kilowatts extra, (i dont know how many horses that is) but because of the vtec, he said that i can only use a little bit of boost. and the turbo will give me more top end. for 200 bucks, i might do it. cause i wanna get a 2000 model prelude so for the meantime, i would like abit more power. without doing anything dramatic to the engine. and he said that is will be top end power, so that means, when im just driving normally, will i get any extra power, cause the normal rev range i use when driving normally is prob around under 5000 revs i think, all i want is extra power, does top end mean when i trash the car to around 6-7000 revs or top end meaning speed. also, if i buy a turbo which can be uses on a stock engine, and using little boost, how will the reliablity and maintenance be compared to not having a turbo. and is there any maintenance with turbo. and how would it sound in a auto. thanks |

Re: turbo my civic
I would be cautious about a turbo for $200. That's a SUPER low price. That sounds kinda iffy to me. I wouldn't waste the money if I were you, especially in an automatic. Save the money for your Prelude. Also, if you are driving normally, your car should not be affected by the turbo.

I suspect that $200 Austrailian dollers price is only for the turbocharger itself, nothing else. If it converts to the $156USD like someone mentioned, that's not an unheard of price for a used turbo. It wouldn't include, of course, the piping, intercooler, fmn-ecu-missing link, the BOV, wastegate, etc. I suspect that price is just for the turbocharger alone.

That would be much more believable.

Re: turbo my civic
Just don't do it. Turbo on a 4 door Automatic. LOL
Plus, you can't just slap a Turbo on and be finished. You must buy other mods so the turbo will work. YOu need engine management. The car will be less reliable. I could go on and on. Take my word.

Re: turbo my civic
Plus with an auto Civic. I'm sure even if you had the turbo set up, you would barely be able to reach the rpm level to which you would even start to feel the turbo kick in. My buddy owns a Turbo Volvo (don't know the year 2000+) and its automatic. You hardly even feel the turbo kick in when you floor it and it shifts gears. Save the money for the Lude. It'll be well worth it when you do. Late....

so yeah if it is just that much money i am sure it is just a basic used turbo. and the guys are correct, you can not just throw the turbo on there and call it done there will have to be some kind of fuel management to keep everything safe. i have heard of autos being turboed but it seems that the tranny might not last too long after that so that is something to be considered when doing this

Re: turbo my civic
That is a lot of strain for an 10 year old auto tranny. But it's a Honda
![]() That sux on the Volvo, You'd think they would tune the ECU for the turbo to work good.

I'm going to have to go with a leave the auto civic alone. There is no point in trying to make an automatic civic fast. Save some extra money for when you get the prelude and do something to it. Plus adding a performance upgrade like that to an automatic is just going to devalue your car. People won't want to buy it.

You make it sound as if adding anything to an auto tranny car devalues, it but doing the same to a manual tranny one doesn't. Many people I know won't buy ANY CAR with performance stuff added, regardless of the trannmission type. If you are modded a car with mainstream resale value in mind, you are in the wrong hobby. Modding any car will typically bring not much added value from the main customer. The market for a modded car is smaller, and if someone wishes to get more $$ for a modded car, he will typically have a much smaller base of potential customers.
