regular maintenance

I just recently bought a 96 cherokee se 4wd.
I am wondering what type of regular maintenance is best for these, im not that knowledgeable in cars.
All I have done so far is change the oil to synthetic and put in a wix oil filter.
Anything else I should check or do.
I think I might put in a new air filter next.

Re: regular maintenance

If it came with the owner's manual, I'd start there. If not, you can probably get one on eBay or at your local Jeep dealer.

Of course, the frequency wil depends on your driving and how much you off-road with it (if at all).

Im not going to offroad much...just dirt roads is the most off-road it will see.
it did not come with a manual, but i got the chiltons repair manual, but it doesnt say when to do any maintenance, it says how to but not how often.

if you bought a jeep, and you wanted it to last a while, what are the major things you would change or add to it?

Re: regular maintenance

Try a basic tune-up. Spark plugs, distributor cap, the rotor under the distributor cap, and ignition wires.

Then I would probably change the front and rear differential fluid, trans fluid, power steering fluid, and flush and refill the coolant system.

Check all brake pads/shoesand drums/rotors. Look for dry rot (cracks or splits) on all hoses and belts. Grease all zerk fittings on suspention and drive shafts.

Or... For about five hundred dollars (+/- pending on where you live and who you take it to) you can pay a local shop / setalership to do all this for you. I bet they'll top off your windshield washer solvent too. Yes, that's right, I said WASHER SOLVENT.

I do all this on both of my vehicles atleast once a year. As well as change the oil every 5 to 6 months (if I use synthetic).
