review of d2 coilovers for s13

lots of rumors have been going on about these coilovers

they are GOOOD

i just installed a set on mine and they are great. 9/7 spring rates are very tolerable on somewhat rough streets. i have absolutely NO body roll no matter how hard the turn is. it feels like riding on rails. the height adjustment is in the bottom part of the strut which goes up and down the coil, so you don't have to adjust the springs much if any at all. camber adjustment is almost too much, its very very hard to perfect it (only downfall of these).

i went up my driveway yesterday and there's a lil dip right before it (water gutter type thing), and tire no. 1 and 3 where on pavement, and tire no. 2 and 4 were over the little dip. tires 2 and 4 went right up in the air and started spinning. that's how stiff these are. jumping on the front of the car, the only movement up and down i could get out of them were the tires. and with all of this, its really fairly smooth driving on somewhat rough streets.

this is the most i could lower it without even touching my springs and keeping camber ok.

the rears i have to lower a little, but ill do that by spring adjustment because my camber is already sitting a little negative.

other pics of the coils and comparison over stock.

i got them for $850 from a friend. they are worth every cent. if you wanted coilovers get them now from advautoparts (AIM) 416-835-8490 as he's selling them for $800/shipped through the end of the month. im not affiliated with him at all but that's the best deal i could find online anywhere at the moment. prices are scheduled to rise drastically after this month and will stay around a price of $1100-1200 (already selling on ebay for that much).

they are definitely a set i like and have my approval over all the tein coilover series. note: i'm a huge fan of tein. but these are just better. they are as stiff as the r series and ride smoother than he's.

all in all a great great buy. get em!!!

Re: review of d2 coilovers for s13

i have the sportline springs and kyb adjustable struts..there ok...but not as stiff as i would like..with my 215-45-17 tires it seems like a nice ride...but if you can...save the money buy some coilovers...well worth it over the springs...thanks for the info and pics NISMO

Re: review of d2 coilovers for s13

the thing is, i already bought them and they're sitting in my room.. so the only way i'd be able to buy coilovers from here on is to sell the kyb agx's and eibach sportlines and get coilovers.. i'll see what i can do cause i actually regret buying the suspension i did.. i know a guy around here who might want it.. unless there's sombody on here who wants it.. pm me if you're interested

Dunno... for 850 Id prolly throw down another 250 and get the SPLs with inverted fronts. The D2s seem nice enough but the only thing that makes me shy away is they have 11ty billion different spring rates but the shocks arn't revalved for the different springs.

Not Trying to piss in your cheerios but thats just my opinion.

i was worried about that too, but these coilovers were valved for 9/7 spring rates, so it rides the way it was made to ride. thats why i paid a tad extra for them and why i like them so much.

next mod is nismo 5-bar's with dr's.... 275's then lsd

sportline/agx combo is purty good but theres nothing like a set of nice coilovers.

i just wanted some feedback on the tein's... thnx

Re: review of d2 coilovers for s13

DO NOT buy it from advautoparts! People ordered them from april and STILL are not getting them! My friend is selling em cheaper, e-mail him at [email protected] his GB they only cost $660 for a set. And yes I have these coilovers too, they are good. But my only gripe is the winter, they make a loud ass noise when going over bumps. Do you have that problem also mynismo? Also i lowered mine more than yours nismo, and my negative camber isn't that bad. I bought some RUCAs and still haven't installed em in yet

Re: review of d2 coilovers for s13

yes i've driven on he's (not my own but on s14). they're stiff but not nearly as stiff as these, and they also ride more uncomfortably.

i have a little noise on the backs over bumps, thought it was normal. maybe it will go away when higher temps come. not concerned about that at all.

negative camber aint that bad. ill be dropping it a little more up front and a lot more in the back in a day or so.

Re: review of d2 coilovers for s13

yea i thought negative camber wasnt bad either till i looked at my tires and realized the insides of my tires were to the wires and my tread all the way to the outside was like friggin new...i was pissed...you'll regret even the slightest bit of negative camber, if its daily driven that is....new tires are not what i like to buy every year....mine were only 2 degrees of neg.

Re: review of d2 coilovers for s13

I really like my KTS SC Betas...the D2's are decent too, I just thought it was pushing it with a 8/6 spring rate . I'd like to see a shock dyno on the D2's, this is were the HE's don't do so well.

Ride on mine is not that bad, the dampening is great. I can smoke railroad crossings (the type where everyone slows down to 10mph, even 4x4's) and not worry about losing teeth. The main problem I have (and other's have mentioned in the 8+/6+ spring rates) is the rear is too light and get's a little bouncy (like 1" up and downs) on certain roads....however, you can't run a much lower rate out back without messing up the handling. Hell I am sure I have had my 'tail end' off the ground a couple times .

If you are lifting tires crosswise that is usually a sign that you are too low. I only lowered mine about 1.4 up front and not even an inch in the back....I went with a 1/2 taller tire that both cleaned up the gap, gave me more cushion in the sidewall, and kept my suspension travel. I also preloaded the fronts about 1cm (80kg) on my S14 to push it into real bumps causing motion and not minor imperfections.

Keep in mind the stock springs are only about 2kg/mm front and rear (114 lb/in)...like a land yacht...I much rather have the stiffness (without harshness) than floating over the road. Also I have driven Cobras with 800 lb/in springs (like 14kg/mm) and although the wheel rates are perhaps different, the ride was really harsh on certain road conditions...I haven't really seen that with my setup.

The Eibach Prokits start at 114 lb/in like stock and move up a bit more at the stiffer progressive rate...however, my biggest problem was the current springs allowed too much motion even on smooth roads.

Re: review of d2 coilovers for s13

factory alignment specs is negative camber. What were your other settings especially toe in/out.

I am at 2 now in the front, I am going to watch it during oil change intervals. Still my AVS ES100 aren't too bad to replace...it's a tradeoff though, I can spend a lot more on tires....lose comfort for the stiffer sidewalls, lose wear for the softer compound, yet gain a lot at 9/10's driving. I'd rather dial in a more aggressive alignment, keep the comfort, better wear, and realize I am in a daily driver ....if money was no object I'd be in $300 per corner tires with bi-yearly tire replacement alignment settings . corners are my favorite thing of driving...straight line stuff is ok for bragging rights, but there is always someone faster...in corners the field narrows.
