Building B18C1 Turbo - have Q's
I just got my b18c1 block and crank. I'm planning on boosting it to no more than 15 lbs. I'm planning on putting arias pistons and eagle rods in, and sleeving the block. I'm probably going to run 400 or 450cc injectors. Is there anything else that I will need to run that much boost safely. I haven't decided on head or intake manifold yet. I would love to go with CTR, but I don't think I'll have that kind of money. Should I upgrade the fuel and oil pumps?

Upgraded fuel is a must when it comes to FI. Fuel pump, fuel injectors, fuel rail ( not really neccesary but nice to have). I would hondata to get it tuned nicely. Then you're set.

try and find a B16a1 head and then just buy CTR cams. I think you can get the cams for like $175, but i cant remember what site i saw them at.

I need the head also - I need everything except the basic block, crank and mounts. I'm building from scratch.

Re: Building B18C1 Turbo - have Q's
for 15 psi you dont even need to sleeve the block. with a sleeved block and forged internals, you could run 20psi easily. As far as management, you dont *need* to upgrade the fuel pump, as the stock one will work fine, but its not a bad idea. the walbro 255lph works good. 450cc injectors like found in the DSM manual tranny turbos will work fine, but at boost levels more than 15psi, you might look into some slightly larger ones just as a precaution. oil pump will be fine, but if you're worried about it, prodrive makes an upgraded oil pump gear that will provide even more oil pressure.
You'll need some good tuning if you want to run 15psi reliably and make the power you should be making. A standalone like AEM EMS or programmable hondata will work very well, but you can also look into the freeware editors. Turboedit for OBD0, or convert to OBD1 and use Uberdata..both are great 'bang for the buck' management options. now moving on to head choices...many people say the b16 head outflows a GSR head. this is both true & false at the same time and i'll explain. I've seen flowbench numbers of a stock b16a head and a stock b18c1 head. they are VERY close. Lets say the b16 outflows the B18C1 head about 5cfm at various points in the graph, but b18c1 has about the same gain at other points. bottom line? b16a & b18c heads are about the same as far as flow, but the b18c1 head has a smaller combustion chamber = higher compression. for your purpose, any DOHC VTEC head will serve well. IMO its not worth the extra money for the CTR head. As far as cam swapping, i have seen well over 400whp on stock b16 cams. Its all in the tuning. |

Re: Building B18C1 Turbo - have Q's
Awesome - thanks for the info - what about intake manifolds?? Are some better than others, or will that not really matter since I am running boost?

short fat runners are best for boost.
