Re: How to add Intermittent wipers to a base 89-91 Civic Hatchback

Alright, I got my hatchback a year ago and it was an STD (standard) Civic. It had almost nothing on it and intermittent wipers was one of them. So I did alot of research and frequent visits to the local junkyard just to prove I was right and finally found how to get intermittent wipers on our poor little civics.

Items you'll need:
- A gray box behind the fuse panel marked with the letter "B"
- A wiper arm from either a crx, 4-door civic, or a hatchback that has
the intermittent on it
- A flat-head screwdriver
- A phillips head screw driver

How To:

Let me just say that this is easy to do, EASY.

First find a civic/crx dx or higher. It can be either a 4-door civic, 2-door hatchback or crx. First and foremost get the box behind the fuse panel. It's a gray box that attaches behind the fuse panel so you will have to unsrew the fuse panel, lower it and bend it a little to find the box on the back. It looks like the old Gameboys. Then use the flat-head screwdriver and push the little tabs holding it in. It should pop out and make sure it has a large letter "B" on the label. The one in your car should be labeled with an "A" and that shows the difference between the two.

Now it's on to the wiper arm so all this can work. First make sure the car has intermittent on the arm and then lets start. First take out the screws below the plastic panel that wraps around behind the steering wheel. There should be three holes under the bottom part, so stick a phillips head in there and unscrew them. Once there out, then take the plastic that wraps around the steering wheel and seperate it by sticking a flat head in between the line in the middle of it. There should be some clicking sounds and the plastic should open into two parts. Don't worry though, you won't break nothing. THen take them off gently, top one is a little tricky but it will move. Then look at the wiper arm and follow it in to where it goes to a little box behind the steering wheel. Unscrew the box off and uplug the plug behind it and it should pop off. Now that's done.

Now all you have to do is replace the box behind the your fuse panel with the one you just got and same goes for the wiper arm. Now turn it on and see how you like your new and improved wipers.

Reasons:
The little gray box's have chips inside that hold both the lights relay, the hazard light relay, the door chirper and the the intermittent wiper relay. The base model civics came with everything besides the intermittent relay and are marked in the front with a large letter "A" while the one with the relay is marked with a letter "B". This is the main core of the wipers turning off and on.

The Wiper Arm is a switch that gives power to the relay which activates the wipers and turns them on and off.

Hope this helps and it did me and now I'm so happy to have them. Good Luck my friend.

Warning: I am not responsible for any damage done to your car or the parts car. It worked fine for me and should work for you.

I have the wiper stalks from my old Civic. It was intermittent. I think I might have some of those integrated relays you need also.
