Plymouth Reliant Car Troubles

My dad has a 1988 Plymouth Reliant and has been having problems for about 6 months now. When he goes to turn on the car and it starts to makes a rumbling sound and the car keeps on shaking repeatedly. The car drinks up alot of gas. He has replaced the alternator and computer. It works for about a day and starts acting up again. He has also changed the oil alot too. He has also replaced the coil. Also, when he turns on the car, the car keeps on putting out alot fumes from gas. Can anyone help me?
