When McLaren Cars developed the car, nearly everything was created as new. You won't find a "Sparco" race seat, a "Schroth" racing harness, a "K&N" air filter, or a "Borla" exhaust on the car - everything was developed from scratch to McLaren's own specifications. They probably used similar companies to develop certain components, but you won't find their names on those pieces.
The Brembo brakes are one of the few parts of the car you will find a name like that on. The engine and attached components, came from BMW Motorsport. The transmission was developed with a US company named Weismann. There were probably other vendors involved in the process, but McLaren used very few off-the-shelf parts anywhere in the car. Hope that answers your question. >8^) ER |

I know that all the components were custom. I was just more interested in who the technical partners were rather then what was purchased. I am trying to compile a list as a go by for a recent car I purchased. With money no object, I figured if the company was good enough for Mclaren then it should be good enough for me. Besides I hate Sparco's crappy seats anyway...

Thats a stupid way of thinking.
I personally favor Recaro, but Sparco is in no way Shitty, and I seriously doubt you can figure brembos into your budget unless they come stock on your car. Don't just pick it because McLaren chose the company. Read up a little, and find the best for you, or what you can afford. |

What was in McLaren's best interests is not necessarily in your best insterest.
Many times, their OEMs were simply one of many suppliers of equivalent products; they weren't the absolute best supplier. And in some cases they used really cheap materials from mass manufacturers. For instance, the switchgear in the cars is positively tacky (I think it's from VW). McLaren worked with myriad sets of constraints that were certainly different from what yours will be. And technology has moved forward a long way since the inception of the McLaren. You'd be better off defining some performance and design goals and then seeing which OEMs best fit your needs for minimum order quantity, quality, performance, proximity to you, customer service, and of course, price. Do you read Racecar Engineering? It's an expensive publication, but there's a wealth of resources in there. Last edited by faisalkhan; 05-10-2003 at 07:20 PM. |

Mclaren OEM issue was just a starting ground. And I do re RE alot. I was only curious as to whom thier OEM's were that's all. Just because they use Penski 8700 series Coil-Overs doesn't mean I'm going to run out and pay $3K a pair for them. I just thought I would be nice to compile a list of OEMs Mclaren used since it doesn't seem to exist anywhere on the web. If there list of OEM's matched My list of OEM's then great, and if not then that's fine too.
here is my list so far: GS battery Dampers: Penske Coil-Over Damper Tyres: Eagle F1 Supercar Wheels: Enkei (Mag) Brake: Brembo Brakes Gran Turismo Brake System 14" Engine: BMW Motorsports Transmission: Weismann I'm Still looking for Interor OEM's |

kenwood made the sound system but that was all custom work, so i don't think you can put that into your car. rgrds maarten |

I wonder where the gold foil lining the engine is from?
BTW, that list of parts is awful short, exactly how much of the Mclaren was manufactured in house?

Interior parts
Nardi steering wheel, I think.
Connolly leather (ultra-thin for light weight). The switchgear is from BMW I think. At least they look very similar. TAG Electronics. One other note about their suppliers. To tie in the project with the Formula One team they used a few Formula One suppliers/sponsors as well. TAG and Shell to name 2. |

Hey,
Sorry to drag up an old topic but I just realised where the front indicators for the Mclaren are from! They are from a post '88 Lotus Esprit! when you think about it this seems logical since Peter Stevens designed both the updated Esprit and the Mclaren F1. The wing mirrors are also the same on both cars too I wonder if any other parts for the Mclaren are also from the Esprit? The wing mirrors (originally from a Citreon CX I believe) also appeard on many sports cars, updated Esprit, Mclaren F1, Jaguar XJR-15, Jaguar XJ220, and some TVR's I think (S3's if I remember correctly) anyway, I hope this helps. I think they are from the VW Corrado. They are definitely not the Esprit mirrors - those have "ribs" on them and are more angular. The McLaren (and TVR Cerbera) mirrors are more rounded.
You are right in that the TVR S3 uses the same mirrors as the Esprit, which originally came from the Citroen CX. Rgds, Faisal. |

I know on "G" shaped Esprits (Esprits designed by Giugiaro) they had different shaped mirrors, but when Peter Stevens updated the car in 88 one of the things to change was the mirrors and they are said to be from a Citroen CX, they look the same to me 'Segg |

Mirrors
We are both partially right.
The CX mirrors and Corrado mirrors are different. In some pictures, I do see the CX/Esprit mirrors on the McLarens. These are the mirrors with the "ribs." They are used on the TVR S3 as well. But all the McLarens I have seen recently seen in person had the Corrado-style mirrors. These are more rounded, and can have a color-coded or black plastic "skirt" (the piece surrounding the actual mirror portion). This mirror is used on the TVR Cerbera as well. Doug Nye mentions only the Citroen CX/Esprit type of mirrors in the book, IIRC. So he's only partially right as well. Sorry about the confusion.
