Question 99-02GT 4.6 5spd..Someone Enlighten Me..

Hey guys, my next car i've decided will be a 5 speed 4.6 gt stang...most likely 02..but i believe 99-02's are all the same.?

Are there any differances in the engine's/driveline etc..? They all got 3.27 i believe, and 260bhp/300btq. Basically, when i have the money saved i wanna get which ever one has the lowest mileage under $13,000.

Also, what are the basic bolt ons that can be done for cheap, that will yield an extra gain in hp or torque..? This will be my first Manual trans also. Currently i drive a 95 4.6 thunderbird, the only thing i did to this car is remove the air silencer, and cut off the mufflers to replace with chrome tips (sounds decent)..

WTF would a mustang sound like without mufflers..? I hear them cars WITH the stock mufflers, and they sound deep as hell, i can't even imagine how they sound w/o mufflers.

good choice of a car.

some basic boltons would be like, coldair intake(bbk cold aair intake $169), exhaust system(flowmaster 2.5in. force2 system $379), underdrive pulleys(bbk underive pulleys $131), and if your pockets are deep a HP twin turbo set up http://www.turbochargedpower.com/96-04%20Mustang.htm

I bought my 2002 GT convertible about a year and a half ago. I've not regretted it once.

I added a CL 80mm MAF, BBK 75 mm TB, CL plenum, BBK X-pipe w/ cats, Magna Flow Cat back, 3.73 Gears, TriAx shifter, subframes and strut tower brace and a Diablo Predator. Total spent was approx $3,500 with labor. Gained about .5 sec at mile high Bandimere. RWHP 253 (baseline 229) RWT 290

I've thought about a ProCharger (about $5,000 installed) but I understand the bottom end of the 4.6 2V is weak. I would limit boost to about 6-8 lbs without new rods etc.

I hope this helps.

I think you are right in that the 99-02 cars are the same. You want more power, but you want cheap power? How cheap is cheap, your fixing to pay $13k.....Spend about $950 on carb and bonnet, $800 on used turbo, $300 on fuel pump, $150 on regulator, + lines and bov and custom piping with this intake... http://www.sullivanperformance.com/Y...old/intake.htm
...and you will have more power for fairly cheap.

Re: 99-02GT 4.6 5spd..Someone Enlighten Me..

I bought a 2000 GT 5 speed last year and I love it. The only difference I can think of is that half way through 2001 they switched from the T-45 transmission to the 3650. Not a big deal in any case.
Hey goody, did you notice any difference with the predator tuner? I ordered it but I am deployed so I haven't tried it yet.

I bought the Predator to correct the speedometer after I went to 3.73 gears. I did not notice any difference from the "Performance Tune", but I'm just not consistent enough to compare one setting with the next. I think the Predator would be best if you bought a custom tune, as opposed to the Performance Tune. Oh well, it's only money.

BTW, you reminded me of something I forgot in my first post. The tranny IMO, sucks. I'm old and I remember the BW T-10 4 speeds from the 60s, which shifted so smooth. This 3650 is slow and "notchy". I've even considered something like a TKO 500, but I'm no sure it would shift more smoothly. I spoke with a Cobra guy who said his T-56 6 speed was notchy too. I don't know how smooth the T-5 or T-45 is.

If I were to get serious, I'd switch to a slushbox.

mustangmann9...DAMN..i cannot even fathom having twin turbo on a stang..nuts..

Wow, thanks alot guys..looks like the mustang has alot of potential.. I originally wanted to stick to a 97-00 camaro..but ever since i drove a 5 speed 00 4.6 stang last year, i've been hooked. For one, i like the seating position, it's not low and like a cockpit like the camaro/vette's...i never liked that although thats what you WOULD want in a race car. I also like the fact that stangs have a very light rear end to do some drifting..

BTW, a buddy of mine has an 04GT 5speed and he showed me that he could chirp 3rd....? It was nuts, i don't know if he was power shifting or what....but it was like...rev..chirp 1st...35mph...chirp 2nd..70mph..chirp 3rd.... I love that sh*t. This was the same night he got it up to 105 in the 35...... NO ONE around though, just us and trees to incase he lost it.

Yeah you are right the trans is a little notchy but oh well. It hasn't gotten in the way of my fun. I haven't driven a T56 Cobra yet, but the Z28 I drove with the T56 was pretty notchy too. Also with the short shifter on the 6 speed the gears are almost too close, It was easy to throw it into too high of a gear. I am sure if I was driving it regularly that woudn't be as much of a problem, its just the innitial impression I got. Have your run your stang at the track yet?

I race at Bandimere in Denver CO. Best in 2004 was 15.33 and this year so far I've been in the 14s once (one 14.88 and about 5 15.0s). Only real difference was the gears. That 14.88 equates to high 13s at sea level. So I try to drive to California now and then to have some fun. With the tranny the way it is I just granny-shift. I have chirped 3rd gear too, but I think it's usually because I'm not shifting fast enough (letting it wind up too much between the gears). I'm not very consistent, so I'm getting a shift light to see if that helps. Planning to go down next weekend for both Sat & Sun. See if I can keep from going home early.

BTW, how bad is it to release the clutch while reving at like 4-5K to shift in 1st to do a burnout..? Doesnt that put alot of stress on the shaft and trans..? Or could manual stand the abuse..

I know if you neutral drop an a/t it's BAD..lol..

Well its not what I would call good for it. Personally I haven't had to take it up to 4000 to do a burnout. Rev it to about 2000 drop it and give it some juice. Again its still bad to do it but just not as bad as 4000-5000 rpm.

Goody you are at some high altitude, I have heard about that killing your power. I am hoping to get home for the fall and take it out to the track. I don't know what elevation MDs tracks are but they aren't any where close to Colorado I am sure. How much did the 3.73's cost total? Sorry for all the questions but I have lots of time to think about these kinds of things.

NHRA has an altitude calculator that can tell what your run would have been at sea level. It's pretty cool. My 14.88 would have been 13.99464 at sea level (.9405 X 14.88) according to NHRA's chart. It doesn't show MD, but it shows the altitude at other places so you can compare. Check it out: http://www.nhra.com/tech_specs/altitude.html

I think the (Ford) gears cost under $200 but it was about $300 to get them installed. You have to buy gear oil and pay tax so I'm thinking it was about $530 total. You already have the Predator so you can correct your speedo.

I wanted an experienced person to do the work, but I didn't want the Ford store to install them for about $700 (total). I like the 3.73 ratio for the almost stock (just bolt-ons) GT because I make a number of cross-country trips and I'm turning around 2500 at 80 in 5th with these gears. I understand a 4V motor that breaths better might make use of 4.10s but I'm happy with my compromise.

Regarding launching at 4-5K, the tires will likely break loose before you lose a clutch, u-joint or gears. I'm just a recreational drag racer, but I launch at about 3k and wait until it hooks. I run Nitto 555 street tires (not drag radials). I don't know if that is the best way to do it but it is the way I do it.

My 5.0 has no mufflers and it has a mean growl to it. It also has a H-pipe as well so it adds to it.

I think though a 4.6 without the mufflers just wouldn't do it. I've seen this '97 Cobra around that put Flowmaster 40s, long tube headers, and an X-pipe on, that sucker is MEAN sounding.

Of course it's a little hard to hear his exhaust with the blower going WFO.
