Zenon head lights
What's Fellas,
I have a quick question. Has anyone, here tried to put Xenon light bulbs on the older 735i? (88) like the one install on newer 740il. ( blueist clear bright lights ) or, anyone know where to get one for a good price. cuz I called a few dealership to get quotes on lights bulbs & according to them they don't make it for older beamers. and light bulbs will cost $300. I bought something similar but, it's not as, bright as the one on new 740's or, the one install on Audi's. if by anychance someone know where I could get one pls. e-mail or, post the link. thanks in advanced T.K.

Well what is on the new 740s is HID... It's not simply Xenon, although it contains that gas in the bulbs. If you want a real HID system you will have to modify an existing system to work with the lenses in your 88... A good speed shop should be able to help you with this. Look at spending at least a grand and up to two and a half for the system. If you're going to hold onto the car for a long time and want to increase your safety it probably would be worth the investment. Otherwise just get an increased wattage bulb or I believe possibly hella smoked lenses have a better cut-off and would work well with increased wattage bulbs.

Try Bavarian Autosport (www.bavarianautosport.com). There you can input your year and model BMW and shop through all parts and accessories which apply to your car. Under 'Exterior' and then 'Lighting' you will find 'High Output Upgrades'.
Bavarian Autosport sells a true-Xenon/HID system apparently applicable to your car. It costs $899.95, and includes all components and instructions necessary for what they claim is a relatively simple switching procedure you can do yourself. As for the price, it seems about right for a genuine HID kit. If you prefer not to spend so much money on such a conversion, you may want to consider PIAA SuperWhite 9005 (high beam) and 9006 (low beam) bulbs, which Bavarian also sells. These should be a direct swap for your current bulbs. They cost $74.95 for each pair, so you're looking at spending about $150 to bring your headlight illumination very close to HID levels (although this is not a true HID system. As for the 1999 7-Series, I was under the impression that HID lighting was standard by this time. At any rate, Bavarian Autosport does not appear to have a conversion kit available for a 1999. Good luck to both of you. I upgraded the headlights of my own '86 528e (H1/H4 bulbs) with Hella Quartz Halogen lights (not applicable for newer cars), and found the difference quite dramatic, so I'm sure your efforts will definitely be rewarded! Here in Germany we get the following Xenon HID coversion kits for BMW and other models:
2 electronic Xenon ballast (made by Hella-Germany) 2 Xenon bulbs (made by Phillips) for H1 and H7 sockets. These are original parts. The ballasts carry the Hella and BMW stamp, nevertheless we use these kits with almost all car brands with H1 and H7 headlights. The street price is 500 Euros, around 455 US$, and that are ORIGINAL parts which are used by BMW! I think most of the offers you can find in the internet are far to expensive and you never know what quality you get. I tried with my friends many different sets but we can only recommend original parts. :flash: |
