Can you get brake pad spacers...?
My XJ has had a problem for a while. There appears to be play in the holders for the front brake pads. As I go down the road, my front brakes make a distinct clicking sound, until I push the pedal. I have encountered this before on a Subaru I had, and the fix was a small metal clip the fit over the holder to fill in the space between it and the pad.
I took it to the local brake shop, showed them the problem and told them about the clips. The guy looked at me like I was an idiot and said the only way to fix that was to pull it all off the Jeep, use a welder to build up the holder, then grind or file it out to fit the pad. He could do it for me no problem, just a mere $350 and I'd be good as new. Does anyone know a cheaper fix or where I can find those clips for the XJ?Thanks! |

Re: Can you get brake pad spacers...?
This problem happens on the JGC too.
My last set of NAPA pads had a set of clips included. 4 each or 10,15,20,25 thou thicknesses. The pad supports do wear and I was considering running a bead with my mig welder but when I saw the shims, they looked a whole lot simpler. The stealership wants $400 per side for new steering knuckles. NOPE - not on this budget. JD |

Re: Can you get brake pad spacers...?
I changed my pads early this summer. About a month later my brakes started screaming every time I used them. I always use "anti-seaze" on the steering knuckles (only where the pad slides), and that usualy helps. Not this time. So I welded a bead on all contact surfaces and used a die grinder to make it look like new. Works great, but I wish I knew about the shims.

Re: Can you get brake pad spacers...?
Thanks JD! Very good news! I hate driving along my road (I have 5 mile of dirt between me and the hiway) listening to those blasted pads rattling around in the holders. I've been thinking about changing the pads anyway, looks like NAPA's the place!
