Question smoke out the A$$?

First, thanks for the help with my fairlady z with the recent problems, my friend just got a 90 300zxTT the other day and like me hes no mechanic, he bought the car for $3500 with only 106,000 kmi, not bad, i noticed when i was behind him, he tryed to lose me letting his turbos spool and when he shifted, black smoke came out the pipes, could this be a broken seal on a turbo or just a leak?...what do you guys think?

If the smoke appeared only when he shifted and wasn't that bad, then its just normal engine wear on the piston rings, which keep the exploding gases inside the cylinder and out of the crank case. If you see a steady stream of black smoke, shifting or not, and its pretty bad, then that is just normal engine wear as well, just alot more of it. Also, when you shift and let off the gas, your air fuel ratio is temporarily screwed up. Suddenly there is a hell of alot less air coming in then the engine thought but the fuel for that air has already been metered out, and the engine runs slightly rich for a second. Thats nothing to worry about, just part of how cars work. Its more common with turbo engines as they are burning more fuel.

Long story short: As long as there wasn't alot of smoke and it only shows up when hes on the throttle hard and shifts, then there probably isn't anything to worry about.

And I would like to know exactly where the hell you buy a TT Z32 for 3500.
