practicing for AutoXing?

hey i'm thinking about trying AutoXing and maybe even get into it seriously afterwards. I'm just wondering, where do you guys practice? Would you have to do it in a parking lot sort of like drifting or are there certain places that you can acutally practice at?

your first year of autoX = practice

after that, every event you are in = practice

as far as car handling, every time you get in your car you should be practicing. make sure that you can place the car anywhere on the road you want it to be (and keep it there). when you are stopping, know exactly how much pressure you need to put on the pedal to stop (in whatever given distance you are trying to) without changing that pressure... just little things like that. the better you know your car, the more you can explore what your car can do when you are on the course.

but, go for it! autoX is the best way to explore what your car (and you as a driver) can do.

Re: practicing for AutoXing?

that helped alot, it really did but i still want to know, where do people practice at? Is it like drifting where you sort of have to practice it underground?

from what i've seen and the people i know that do it, there isn't very much illegal practicing. it's the time you put in at events that makes you a better driver *aside from what i've previously said*. that's why everyone seems to obsess over "seat time". most of the driving you would do in autoX would be pretty dangerous on the street...

autoX is for enhancing your car control abilities, it trains the driver to know what the car can do *in safe conditions*.

to answer your question: people practice on "practice days" - there are normally one or two a year in any given region. you get a few more runs than a normal race day. what you haev to remember; an event isn't necessarily a competition.

Re: practicing for AutoXing?

like I said on another thread. I'm not a fan of watching a "10 second car". I love to push myself as a driver and see how far I can push my abilites.

Re: practicing for AutoXing?

Evolution Driving School.

Thats where I practice. As a matter of fact we just lost our venue because a bunch of ricer drifter wanna b's. It seem a couple showed at our practice day on Saturday. Saturday evening when everyone was gone they came back with a bunch of stolen trays from McDonalds. They put them under thier rear wheels set their hand brake and proceeded to drift around the lot with their FWD cars. The rent a cops chased them away and them the owners of the lot (local police) said that was it no more SCCA it is attracting trouble.

So instead of driving 2 hours to my nearest Autocross I have to drive 3.

I am not Autocrossing this year. I have decided to only take Evolution Schools and attend major events like the National tour and possibly the National runoffs.

I get more runs in a single Evolution School that a whole year of Autocrossing.

Re: practicing for AutoXing?

Yes they specialize in Autocross. My transformation from their school was noticable to everyone at the local venue. I went from being a pretty fast driver to one of the fastest. I thank them for that.

I also credit them for my success at Mazda-Rev-it-up in Miami where I took 3rd place out of 1500 people. That was more of a win to me than any SoloII competition. We all drove the same car on the same course. It was purely a driver competition.

The best money I have ever spent on Autocrossing.

Here is a link to their website:

whats so retarded about drifting? you don't think drifters drive their car well? I'm not trying to like bash you or anything but drifting is very complex and requires tons of car control and the ability to stay calm, smooth, and focused under abnormal conditions. I'm no autocross guy, I'd like to get into it though, thats why I've been researching it here for the past few weeks, but anyways, just because its all mainstream and popular doesn't mean its retarded, believe me, the people that acctually drift and aren't doing it cuz "its the cool new fad" don't like all the posers anymore than you do, infact we probably like them less.

How much are the evolution courses? I looked at their website but don't see it listed. Incidenly they are in my home town (Virginia Beach) this weekend! Doesn't give me any time to prepare! I'd like to go to this before I go to Mazda Rev It Up. Might have to give them a call tomorrow.

Re: practicing for AutoXing?

The courses vary by phase, I believe from friends taking the courses that approx 200 dollars is for the first phase. Im not sure about the others.
