Unhappy Alternator?

When I start my 88 Blazer S-10 2.8 I can feel like the engine goes up and down very lightly (like breathing). For example the led on the radio goes from lighter to darker. After a while it stops and everything looks ok.

When I'm driving I can see the battery voltemeter go down from 14 and then up again but it never goes down to red. Sometimes I feel like the engine it going to stop ussually when I'm waiting in a traffic light. The battery is almost 3 months old.

Any advice is welcome. Thank you in advance.

Re: Alternator?

Your alternator's internal voltage regulator is bad. Take it off of the vehicle and have it checked. You will probably have to replace the alternator. Same exact thing happened to me on a different vehicle.

Re: Alternator?

Thank you for the response. That's a good starting point. Do I have to replace it ASAP or can I live with this problem for a couple of weeks?.

Re: Alternator?

I would not wait.

It will not cost you anything to get it checked out. If your Alternator is bad, you'll probably be running off of your battery before too long and will probably end up stranded somewhere.

I'd go to AutoZone or Checkers and get it checked out. If it is bad, they (AutoZone) have their Lifetime guarenteed Alternators for about $80-$100 bucks. If you're between paydays, try a wrecking yard after you've been to AutoZone and have verified the problem.

In my situation, I bought a brand new alternator and installed it. I drove down the road and the A/C would barely blow, the headlights would glow rather than shine, couldn't hear the radio, and I had no power. Then without warning the headlights would flare up so bright that you thought you hit your high beams, the radio would blare, and the A/C sounded like a hurricane and would blow you out of the truck. If this is something like what is happening to you it is not good for the other components on the truck. Don't Wait get it replaced.

Never EVER put repair like this off for weeks. Get it repaired ASAP or you could fry your whole electrical system.
