smell problem...

Hello guys..... My brother just bought a 98,BMW 528i.... amazing car in a very good condition.... it has 38000 miles and has certified warrenty uptill 100K. The problem he has is that his AC(ventilation) system smells bad, it really smells like AWWWAAwWWW.. as if its a public toilet. He has changed the filters on AC intake... what else should he do... his warrenty doesnt cover it... BMW dealer says that they can clean the air system but thats what they said before changing the filters (150$).. and asking 200$ for cleaning it.... Do you think it will make any difference or just another waste of money.... Anyone ever had a problem like this? and what to do now?.......

I had the same problem with my Accord. Apparently it had something to do with the fact that the person before always kept the vents recirculating the same air instead of leaving it open to take air from the outside. I did the same thing in what your brother did. That smell is stuck to the channels where the air is coming through. Tell him to just leave the vents open to pull from the outside and use them often to clean them out. I've heard some people just spray disinfectant or some form of air freshner directly into the vents themselves. Hope that helps.

Just my suggestion. If they already performed the cleaning in the system. Have him drive with the vents open and the AC/Heater on. The more use he puts to it, the sooner the smell will leave. Unfortunately I know of no other way. Like I said, I used to have that problem when I first purchased my car. Not anymore though, I don't have that smell coming in my car.

Cool

BMW has issued a service bulletin for the E-46 with regard to this problem. I will try to type what the bulletin states:

Under certain environmental conditions, moisture that remains/condenses on the evaporator after the vehicle's ignition is turned OFF may eventually result in a musty odor coming from the vents when the air conditioner is first switched ON.

To remedy this problem apply air conditioning disinfectant to produce an environment inhospitable to microorganisms.

Personally I used Frebreze (not certain of the spelling) and it worked but Lysol would help too. I removed my ventilation filter on top of the firewall, turned my A/C and fan on hi, and sprayed it into the inlet for a few seconds until I smelled it in the interior. So far it has worked but I believe it will require periodic reapplications. Give it a try...
