Replacing Rotors on 96 Honda Accord
Hello, this is my first visit to this forum, and I really hope someone can help.
I need to replace the rotors on my 96 Honda Accord. I've heard that getting the rotors off can be a pain. How do they come off? Do I need a hydrolic press to remove the bearings? Do I need any special tools? These are my 3 basic questons, but is there anything else I need to know? Step by step instruction would be appreciated, but is not exspected. Can anyone please help? Thanks. Mr.g |

unless you have a shop you might as well not mess with it...the entire front spindle has to be taken off and the rotor pressed off
. Buy good rotors so you don't have to mess with it again anytime soon.

thanks for responding,
The rotor has to be pressed off the hub? Is this done while on or off the car? |

can't press it off while it's on the car
i suppose you could take off the the spindle and take it somewhere to have it pressed

Re: Replacing Rotors on 96 Honda Accord
Hmm, very interesting. Unless Honda totally redesigned the suspension for later models, it's weird that you need a press to get the rotor off. As far as I know, for most cars, you just take off the caliper and the rotor should come off. I know for earlier Honda models, you need to take the spindle nut off, but not the steering knuckle, that's too much for a rotor. Is it true that Honda designed it this way?

Re: Replacing Rotors on 96 Honda Accord
What a nightmare. The rotor is behind a round plate that holds the lugs. It connects to the rotor with 4 bolts. To remove this plate, I removed the 4 bolts and the spindle nut. At this point, the rotor was actually loose behind the plate, but I still couldn't get the plate off. The hole in the center of the plate has grooves all around that are dug into the axle.
I didn't know how far they went back, and mechanics warned me not to try using a slide hammer on it. They said the normal way to do it is to take everything off starting with the ball joint and arm, then put it the whole peice into a press to get the plate (or hub, whatever) off the axle. Press the hub, axle, off whatever. everyone is seems to tell me something different including the chiltons manual, which oddly enough, the pictures just skip right over this part. mr.g |

Re: Replacing Rotors on 96 Honda Accord
Here's a pdf that shows you how step by step to remove rotors for this particular design.
http://www.federal-mogul.com/fmeconn...loads/3501.pdf It's a PITA to figure out on your own. Lots of people say to use a slide hammer. They neglect to tell you that you need to remove the tie rod end and lower ball joint to swing it off the axle then remove the 4 bolts that hold the bearing on the steering knuckle. Have fun!

Slide
I Found The Process Of Removing And Replacing Rotors To Be Very Easy. What I Did Was First Take Off The Wheel Of Course, Remove The Caliper And Caliper Mounting Bracket, Remove The Screws Connecting The Hub To The Caliper. Then I Connected A Slide Hammer To The Lugs And Simply Used The Slide To Remove The Hub And Bearings One Time From The Axle Then Reverse. This Only Took Me About An Hour To Do And I Have No Mechanical Experience I'm Just Kind Of Handy Or So I Believe. Also Be Very Carefull In Which Rotors You Purchase If Your Upgrading. I Bought Some Crossdrilled Rotors From T.a.s. Auto.com (the Accord Store) They Are Cast Iron And Under Hard Braking In The Rain The Rotors Can Cup(warp).
