This is the third time ive had to post this due to lack of responses, but im not gonna stop tryin till i get some.
My 1990 Honda Accord 4 door Lx has a leak on the right of the block, causing oil to spray and be thrown off of the timing belt. Oil is getting on the underneath of the hood and all over the belts and such. First question: What symptoms should i look for in a cracked block? People have told me that if it were the head gasket, there would be white smoke coming out of my exhaust while other people are telling me that white smoke means water is getting into my oil. all i wanna know is some of the symptoms and what i should look for! HELP ME PLEASE!!!

It is leaking on your timing belt?......if it's leaking there why is it throwing on your hood? Any way look at your cam seal....then check out the balacing shaft seal they'll sometimes pop out. Happy hunting.

Re: Gasket Or Block?!?!?!
You've already been given the best possible advice --- clean everthing, then look and see EXACTLY where the leak is coming from.
Please understand, none of us can actually SEE your car, and you've been given a lot of good advice, (contrary to your whiny comment about "lack of responses"). We're all VOLUNTEERS here. There is no single symptom of a cracked block. It depends WHERE it's cracked. True - ANY smoke out of the pipe is bad, and white smoke is steam! How does water get into the engine? Usually from the cooling system. Go figure! (By the way, if you really want to use rainbow colors, try not to use any that are all but invisible against the blue background). Do what's been suggested. If you don't like that, then take it to a repair shop. Failing all else, sell the thing! |

When i say the oil is getting on the hood, i mean the underside, being exposed to the engine.
How does a block get cracked? Do you have to run it really hard? or can it happen from just old age? As for "my whiny comment", if you were me you would be very fed up with this whole thing and have the same attitude as me so just give me a break. |

Alright, I drove the car for an interview over to my local town center.
So im on my way to this interview and all of a sidden i see more smoke except this time its coming out from under my hood. I get into the parking lot and i look under the hood and it is coming off of my radiator. Checking the coolant, i realized there was none. AHHHHH! here i am in the parking lot quite a ways from my house with no coolant or no money. What am i to do? screw it go in and go through your interview with a damn crappy car on my mind. ( i got the job by the way). I come outside and decide that with no other choice i must drive it home. I am on my way home and it starts to overheat so i stop it at a red light and turn off the car until it gets green. When i try to turn the car back on, no luck. Oh crap. Here i am right in the middle of the road with a car that wont start. I turn my hazards on sit there for about a minute and try to start it again. HALELUJAH It starts. Im on my way down a hill maybe 3 stoplights from the place i got interviewed and 2 from my house. I see my friend with his old crappy ass ghetto rigged mx 6 and i tell him my car is about to overheat. i stop at the light, turn off my car, and he gets his tow straps and tows me home. WHAT THE HELL! Why is all my antifreeze gone now? Are there anything now that i can think the leak is with these new symptoms? Recap of all problems: Antifreeze gone. Oil spewing out from somewhere near the timing belt. No compression every once in a while. HELP |

Re: Gasket Or Block?!?!?!
Time to tow your car to the repair shop and save your first paycheck to pay for the repairs. Do you have air in your bicycle tires???

Young one....we have to see the engine...you have gotten good advice already. Tow it to the garage....this may be over your head to repair.

Re: Gasket Or Block?!?!?!
Well, in addition to your oil problems, you almost certainly have a cracked radiator. Pretty common with those plastic ones.
And I'm with henrymv. (As I've said before) you've already had good advice, but you're asking a bit much for us to help much more. A picture of WHAT? A motor with oil all over it? Look, bottom line -- your car has fairly serious old age problems. Either shoot it or find a shade tree mechanic who han help you by actually BEING THERE. |

Re: Gasket Or Block?!?!?!
I concur with Accordcodger....those honda plastic radiators do crack, and it is just easier to replace them then repair them. You can find 3 party manufacture radiators for under $100....and seeing a picture with oil splattered all over the engine will not help. Oil does not spaltter like blood....

Re: Gasket Or Block?!?!?!
but it does spray like water!
So a cracked radiator wont have anything to do with the oil leak will it? or does it? Yeah thanks for all the advice though henrymv acoordcodger...yeah |
