2002 neon stuck in the rain

Hey guyz my wife got stuck in that amsive down pour in new jersey, and her car was submergerd for a little while, the dealers mechanic says the engine is done, my question is there anything we can do to try to get running again we don't have money for a new engine.

Its a long shot but if it turns over change the oil spark plugs wires when you have the plugs out crank engine over to get any excess water out thenput plugs back in let me know if it works.
