Subaru WRX STI vs Thunderbird SC

I just got finished washin the SC, inside and out, and figured I would hit town, and try and find some prey. No luck. A bunch of lemmings in V6 Mustangs, and a "cruise" with an RSX... just doin triple digets down the interstate. I decided to check the local hang out spot to see what was going on. I talked to a few of my buddies, and said they were heading down to Richmond to check out the street racing. (If you're familiar with Richmond, you've heard of Broad St.)

We go down nearly the entire length of Broad. From Capitol Mazda... all the way into the city, into the ghetto. We ctach every red light. My boddy in his modified 3.8 Camaro tries to catch a race with a stock Focus, but the Focus driver chickens out. We go down a few more miles and turn around, and head back in the other direction. We get stopped at a light. I'm in the left lane, (which is REALLY wide, almost 2 lane-wide.) behind the Camaro, a 4Runner in the middle, and no one to the right, when I hear something loud. No, not a ricer 4cyl, or a muscle 8cyl, rather a Boxer 4... with exhaust.

My buddy takes it fairly slow, so I stomp it, and try to pass on the left, but the wide lane, becomes a skinny lane, so I slow down, and jump into the middle lane, while he waves for me to go get 'em. I catch up to him, looks mostly stock, besides a really loud exhaust. We get a couple red lights, stuck in traffic none the less. We finally weave our way out of traffic, I slowly pass him, just to let him know I'm there, then I hear the sound of a blow off valve, and watch him rocket by. I downshift to 3rd, and follow suit. DAMN. he keeps pulling. and pulling. and pulling. I'd say... 4 bus lengths, maybe more by 90. We finally catch a light and we get lined up. Light changes, and I slip the clutch, as to not get some nasty wheel hop. By 15mph I have the edge, shift to second, and hes a fender past me, by 3rd, hes multiple bus lengths. By 110, hes gone. We catch another light. The conversation goes like this...

Me: "GOD DAMN! "
Him: ""
Him: "Is that a 5 speed or 6 speed? "
Me: "5-speed... with an Eaton blower"
Him: " "

Light changes, and I get a head start, and by 1st I have about a carlength, second, hes a bumper past, by 110, gone. again.

After that, I decided to head home.. Time to invest in the Magnum Powers stage III blower..

Re: Subaru WRX STI vs Thunderbird SC

Yeah, I doubt he was giving it anything off the line. I've seen a close to stock STi cut a 1.6 sec. 60' at Speedway. Those cars are sick outta the hole.

I think the SS would fair alot better.

Good loss.

Good loss.

Not saying I doubt your story, just never heard of an AWD car losing off the line on the street... On a prepped track might be another story...

Re: Subaru WRX STI vs Thunderbird SC

He was obviously taking it easy at the beginning judging from the outcome.

Re: Subaru WRX STI vs Thunderbird SC

Look I love STis and my best friend has one but i gotta tell ya, unless they drop the clutch high it isnt very impressive off the line.
All those magazines that get stock 13.1, 13.2 1/4 miles times are dropping thier clutch up around red line when they take off. Do that to your daily driver and see how long it lasts!

I got a video of me in the 3000GT running my best friend in his 04 STI at the track. I missed 3rd and pulled a low 16, he slipped out the clutch easy at around 3000, 4000 rpms, without dumping it and pulled a mid 15. so yeah I believe ya.

i've ran next to them 3 different times. and from a 15mph roll...they are some of the meanest cars on the road

Re: Subaru WRX STI vs Thunderbird SC

i've never got a full race with a sti, but i've always gotten the best of them

unless you think 60-90 is a full race in 300+hp cars

Re: Subaru WRX STI vs Thunderbird SC

If an STi pulled a mid 15 thats a piss poor driver. Regardless of awd launch, they still have 300 hp and 300 lbs-ft of torque

As stated previously, that is a piss poor driver. If he was launching at 4K rpms he should still see a 2.0 sec. 60' time, which is better then most rwd cars on street tires that I have seen at the track. STi's aren't just off the line hole shotters, they also have power up top, and dyno around 240whp. That's more then a 99+ Mustang GT, and on a lighter chassis.

BTW, the STi's transmission, driveshaft, clutch, and differential are all near bulletproof. Your friend should take my car and let me take over payments on his
