Unhappy alarm system

Hey ya'll,

I have a 2001 pontiac grand am that I have had for two months a month of that time it has been in the shop (dealer shop). As a result of the car just not starting. It was thought to be the fuel pump (not) something with the ignition system (not) now the mechanic is saying it's the alarm system. The dealer didn't give me the original key and the car's alarm system has been tripped. The problem is he can't get it reset and the GM people wont tell him how to reset it. So now my car is sitting there basically just there. Does anyone know about the alarm system for the 01 grand am or do I need a new mechanic? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks all. babybird

The car doesn't really have an alarm system unless the previous owner put on an aftermarket alarm. If it's the original one it's a keyless remote entry system other then that doesn't do much except cause some people problems. If the system has been tripped, the security light on the dash will blink when you try to start the car. What you do is put the key in the ignition and turn it to the "on" position for about 5-20 mins when the system resets and recognizes the key again the light should then stay on steady, at this point you should be able to start you car. If the system is completely malfunctioning then you would need a dealer to look at it unless you mechanic is good with those type of systems. good luck

Re: alarm system

i have a 2003 grand am with a keyless entry alarm. You should be able to reset it by pushing the button behind the light if installed near the gas pedal. If not put the key in the ignition and turn it to the "on" position. Now turn it back and forth 3 times going from "on" to "off". This should reset it let me know also what kind of alarm you have.

Yep, GM has horrid problems with the passlock2 systems on these cars. Unfortunately they won't fess up to it. THe only fix is to replace the sysem which is usually around $350. If you just want to drive it, turn the ignition on without starting it for 10minutes. Then you can start it. Unfortunately, it will fail again until you have it fixed. Oh, the system is in the cyl. lock and is not dependant on your keys so you can make copies of the keys and it should still work.
