Question Newbie car dilemma

Hi ,I'm new to this forum and I'm somewhat stuck in a dilemma in buying a new car in August '05. It's kinda a bit early to ask, but I'd prefer to decide early and research it thoroughly then choose not too long before I buy the car. Oh, and I may sound quite a bit spoiled but this is a deal my parents are willing to make for getting accepted into uni.
I live in Ontario, and I have 6k to work with (planning for a 240sx), but when I brought the idea of buying a used car to my parents, they gave me a deal. The deal was, I can buy whatever car I wanted with my own money but they won't help with anything (such as insurance, repairs, maintenance, etc) but, if I let them buy the car (my car of choice), they will take care of insurance, certain repairs, maintenance, and I will pay them back in monthly installments (something like a finance with 0% interest). If I let my parents pay, the limitations are that the car has to be a brand new model and so far they havn't given me a suggestion the most that they are willing to invest, but they keep pushing me into getting a Tiburon.
Now regardless of the car I get, I am planning to drift occasionally (if I can find a place to do it). I do somewhat do lowspeed e-brake drifts with my elantra (usually 60-80km/h but even then I don't think with my driving ability is considered a drift, prolly just some fishtail :/ or a powerslide). Since I'm planning to drift, I'd like to know some suggestions on the newer cars, since I've already decided on the 240sx if I buy. From what I have learned, MR's and FR's are ideal at drifting, and seeing what cars Ontario has to offer, nothing fits witin the pricerange. I guess that means I'm going to have to invest a bit into changing that. And even though they are willing to invest in a car as expencive as the Tiburon, I don't think I'd drift in it, as it is quite possible for me to crash, and fixing a Tiburon is probably way out of my price range. I have crashed my elantra a few times, nothing serious though, mostly curb and garbage. Anyways, if you don't mind, please suggest a few possible cars that are under let's say... 25k (enormous amount but can't really overule the possibility of a tiburon) and an estimate on the price to make it more ideal to drift with.
Thanks and Sorry for the trouble (especially since my post is so large)

Re: Newbie car dilemma

One question: Are you buying this car as a drift car or daily driver?

Re: Newbie car dilemma

Well, I plan to use the car as a daily driver but, I'd like to drift in it when I have some spare time on my hands (if I'm lucky enough to find a place to drift).

Re: Newbie car dilemma

Don't bother with drifting especially if its going to be a new car(and given your price range, almost certainly an FF).

Or take it to Monster Miata for the Ford 5.0L swap.

Re: Newbie car dilemma

WOW, I had no idea the Miata was FR, thanks so much. Anyways, I've read the forums a bit, and I see that it may be possible to switch FR to 4WD. Is it possible to make an FF into FR?

Re: Newbie car dilemma

The cost to switch from ff to fr?
Well, for one thing, its not like it hasnt been done before, theres the Focus rs8, a ford focus with a rwd v8 (a stroked 4.6 i think),i saw a rallye lookalike one at IAS east.

Focus RS8

Heres a sample of what the conversion would cost for a V8 focus such as this (gotten from http://www.ford-v8-focus.com/):
Q: How much would it cost for JD Motorsports to build and furnish everything?
A: If we furnish used car, new motor, new transmission- 5 speed or automatic, front & rear disc brakes, 8.8 mustang rear, the Kugel kit and do the installation the price will be $30,000.00 US . This does not include optional: leather interior, wheels, tires, ground fx body kit etc.

for your reference, 30k us is approx. $39,400 canadian.
This with the price of a new focus (about 14k) brings to a grand total of 44K or 58k canadian.

In my opinion, thats just not worth it.

I'm not sure of what special cars you get in canada that are not availiable in the us but maybe you should look elsewhere. Basically, if you want fr your options are basically going to be either the miata, mustang, some big/lux cars (crown vic, some bmws, mercs, lexus, etc), or trucks. Most of the sporty/sports car that are fr are older cars since they were phased out b/c ff is less expensive to produce.

Oh, and sorry wrinting a novel.

Re: Newbie car dilemma

Whats awesome is how the Focus has the "hole" in the rear to fit in a differential... Pure Rallye sytlez, yo.

You can buy WRC stuff from Ford Racing now, bodykits, wheels, whatever. :bigthumbs:

Re: Newbie car dilemma

don't they have an integra converted to rwd thats competing in formula d? they said its difficult to drift because the original set up was ff and by having the power coming out of the rear it upsets the balance...something like that...

i would have to agree w/ some on this forum if you get a USED miata it won't cost you that much for the earlier gens maybe (2-7k i got my 97 for 7k). plus there are TONS of parts for the miata
