Passlock security problem

I drive a 99 Pontiac Grand Am and the car frequently thinks I'm trying to steal it - you know, security flashes and you have to wait 10 minutes to try and start it.

The car just went in for its third time for the same problem in 6 months. I know that Passlock can be disabled (for remote car starters, Passlock is temporarily disabled), however, no mechanics or otherwise qualified people will bypass Passlock for me. (for liability purposes???)

Anyway, I had a thought and I've run it past a few mechanics. What if a remote car starter is installed that temporarily bypasses Passlock? As long as I use the remote car starter, shouldn't I be able to start my car? My car doesn't have problems once it is running (except for the security light coming on solid and nothing happens to the car).

Does anybody know if this would work? The mechanics that I talked to think it COULD work hypothetically, but, of course, nobody will commit. I know it doesn't fix the problem, but I really don't care much anymore - I just want to be able to start it when I want to.

Re: Passlock security problem

Had the same problem. Took it to the dealer
cost me about $350 to put in a new PassLock!

Good Luck!

i got the same problem too, haven't quite figured it out, dealers are telling me that key lock cylinder needs replaced or my keys are bad. I've tried a battery bypass switch to shut off the computer but that doesn't seem to be working either. I got quoted at 160$ for just the key lock cylinder, but i think you can get it online from a part store for 80-90. couldn't tell you whats involved with putting one in.

Re: Passlock security problem

The passlock is in your ignition cylinder...

That's what the dealer told me.
I was just happy to get it fixed.
It's a real pain in the butt when your
car is thinking that YOU are stealing it
LOL

Re: Passlock security problem

Ahhhh, never knew of a cheaper way to get around it.

But the bypass didn't work??

That sucks, a cheaper way out sure
would have been better!!

yeah didn't work, it would kill the flashing light but everytime you go to start, it comes back. Still have to wait 10 minutes.
