Hello everyone. I am new here and I have a real confusing problem. When my wheels are straight only there is a grinding noise in the front toward the center of the car like someone is dragging a dowel rod down an old fashoined washing board or something is hitting the vents in the rotor. The noise progresses and digresses with accel and braking. Through bends it is silent. The steering seems tight and the brakes and rotors are new and the backing plates are not rubbing. It was making the noise before the brakes and rotors were replaced. I have no idea what it can be. If you have any ideas or need more info please feel free to email me at
Thank You Very Much ! Tom |

Re: 99 Grand Am Quad 4 Progressive Grinding When Wheels Are Straight ONLY???
I have a questions, did you replace the rotors yourself or did a shop do it for you. If you have antilock brakes and used the wrong rotors this could be your problem. You can check them by looking at the back of the rotors. They will have what looks like square cogs on them. If you have antilocks they are proper if not change the rotors again and the problem should go away. If the rotors are correct then you will need to look elsewhere.

Had a problem like this one. I heard a metal sounding grinding noise especially at low speeds. I was sure it had to be the rotors or brakes. UPon replacing them, the noise still existed. Luckly a mechanic at dealership heard of similar problems that was caused by the cares TIRES, belive it or not. Somethign to do with the sidewall rubbing.
Anyway.....replacing the tires totally got rid of the sound. Give it a try. |
