engine type

What is the engine name for a 95 eagle talon tsi? I think it was like 4gdeblahblah i really can't remember. Also is there any way to look at the serial number of an engine and get a history or at least see what model it is or where it came from?? When i bought my car it had a new engine in it, but I'm not sure if it was replaced with another TSI engine or something different. THX.
