77 c10 knocking
I just bought a 77 c10 with a 350. Its got about 175,000 miles on it and every once in awhile it sounds like it may be knocking. If it was knocking wouldn't it do it all the time cause my friends truck was knocking real bad all the time and it got louder as he gave it gas. My truck if i give it gas the knocking sound goes away. Can somebody please help me figure out what this is?

Re: 77 c10 knocking
Fuel pump? Sometimes the fuel pump will knock so loudly that that some will mistake it for a cam problem. Could also be a crack in the flywheel. That's about all I can think of right now for an intermittant knock....
Does it only do it when first started? When it is hot? Only when cold?

It doesn't seem to matter if the engine is cold or hot. It just does starts making noise whenever it feels like it.

is it doing it under heavy load or when you are still. If it is doing it at heavy load you could be spark knocking.

I can only hear it when its idiling. I think i may have fixed the problem by replacing the spark plugs and wires. it runs a whole lot better now.

you may want to try tacking off the valve cover and using a socket and rachet to tighten the valve springs up i'm going to warn you try not to get any trash in there and if you do decide to do that it is very messy

Re: 77 c10 knocking
Just an idea here...with that many miles, you could be looking at low oil pressure. As clearences wear, the oil has a more likely chance of escaping from around rod and main bearings, camshaft bearings, even through the lifters. It could be as simple as a new oil pump, requiring the removal of the oil pan. Or it could be the engine has had the crap driven out of it. As long as your using quality gas, and the engine has been taken care of, the logical thing is normal wear and tear. One last thing is that you should not be using the heaviest oil out there. I would recommend 10w40 mobil conventional oil. No additives or Motor Honey. And don't buy that High Mileage crap, personally I believe it's just a marketing gimmick. I have not seen any difference. But do what you need to. This has always served me well. Hope this helps -Chris
