97 Explorer - overheating

Went to go up a hill today in moderate summer heat and heat guage climbed almost instantly. Let idle and then returned to lower temp. Vehicle only has 50miles on it and never had problems prior to this. Could it be the thermostat? All fluids okay and reservoir still has coolant in it.
