OBD II Scanner
Looking to buy a good OBD II scanner for my 2001 Passat. Any suggestions on a good buy?

go to ross-tech.com. they sell an OBD interface and software so you can use your own PC -laptop or desktop- as a powerful diagnostic tool.

What are you looking to spend? What do you want out of it (just a scan and a clear codes)?
Depending on what you want out of it, the cheaper but decient ones are around $100. I have one that I got for around $100 and it does great! Got it at checker or something such as that. And on my dub I used it many a times. For the really nice specialized ones they can be in the $1000's.

Or, if you want to go the Palm Pilot route, the mini-version of the Ross-Tech (sort-of): http://www.shadetreesoftware.com/ Keep in mind that Ross-Tech and Shadetree is VW specific software. You'll be able to do many things with these, i.e. change your ECU settings for various things as well as look at each electronic module independently. A good example is on Tiptronic Transmissions, you can change the values so that your transmission goes into sport mode (same as Audi) vs. the family car mode (all VW Passats). I changed mine and oh what a difference it made. You can also do things with your radio, alarm, dooor locks, etc. You can by all means get one of the $100 generic versions, but it will not allow you to dig deep into the true Module values of your Passat. |

Yes the VAG-COM goes much further than any generic scanner. I use one even though I also keep a complete OTC Genisys system ($3500). No matter what you end up with remember it will only provide the codes and not the diagnostic proceedures/troubleshooting. For that you need a repair manual. None are better than Bentley.
