try checking the alternator. It might only have enough juice to just do a couple things on the inside of the car (ie: show time on cd player)

what exactly does work? dash lights? headlights? turn signals? i wouldnt say alternator simply because i didnt hear you say the charging system light came on. even if it did and you shut it down you should have enough juice to restart the car and drive like 30 minutes. did you check your fuses at all? or put in a known good battery?

start with the basics, fuel and spark. is fuel being delivered? if not is the pump bad, clogged etc? is the filter clogged? do you have gas in it? if its getting fuel then check the fire. are your plugs good? wires ok? dist cap ok? ignition coil ok? ignitor ok?
