Which intake manifold to install?

ok... UGH!.. This is a weird question. ok..about a few months back I had swapped my engine from a D15B7 to a D16Y7.... My friend that did the swap decided to use nearly all of my old components like my starter, old intake manifold, old exhaust manifold, old Power steering pump, old compressor, but new engine. Now, I have ALL of these newer parts but one thing I REALLY wanna install is the newer intake manifold. This engine came out of a OBDII 97 DX. I have a 92 OBD1 LX. I was wondering if I would benefit at all installing the newer intake manifold? Its the weird one with the intake hole coming straight up. Does that have more or less sensors and connector thingies on it or will it bolt right on? For a fact, I see that my fuel rail will not fit this newer manifold so im guessing I have to use the newer rail also. My gas milage is becoming MORE and MORE horrible! I dont understand! Now im getting about 200 miles to the tank... this is killing me!. Think this manifold will help any, since it belongs to this engine in the first place....

Thanks all!

I of course have allll the tubing and fuel-rail and EVERYTHING that goes with it. I took it apart to really really clean the inside of this thing. All it has now is dust since its been sitting in my garage a few months now.

ok well I tried to inspect everything to see if it'll install fine but I found one problem. I saw that there is a transmission cable (auto) connected to the little rotor that also connects to the throttle cable. This cable is too short for new location the throttle body is in. Do I really need this cable? I'm guessing its the cable that makes your tranny downshift when you floor it? I have no idea what this cable is but I know that it moves when I move the gas pedal. Is this thing really important?

Re: Which intake manifold to install?

that cable that moves when you press the gas is what opens up the butterfly on the throttle body to let air in. With out that cable you won't go anywhere. I really doubt that it's your IM that's making you get bad gas mileage. Have you given your new motor a tune up at all?

Re: Which intake manifold to install?

first thing i would do before going thru the trouble of a manifold change, would be a valve adjustment. if you have never done this before im sure there is a wealth if info on this forum somewhere giving specifics. i bet you could definatly increase you mpg with on. how many orig miles on that d16y7?

That cable is called a Kick down cable. No one but the dealer has it. I tried driving with it disconneted. Wow the tranny slips alot and does NOT downshift when I floor it. It really sounds like its hurting the torque converter without it. The engine came with 36,500 miles on it. Now it has about 40,000. I dont think it needs adjustment. If it did, I know how to do it anyway but I dont have the specs for it. My haynes manual is for a 92-95 civic I have a 97 engine.

Re: Which intake manifold to install?

d16y7 intake manifold is crap. if you notice, performance manifolds have a large plenum for a large amount of air volume.. the y7 has almost NO plenum. they are for gas mileage.

EXACTLY! Not to mention the runners (tubes going to each cylinder) are curved and about the worse design possible for them. Notice how any aftermarket intake manny will always have straight runners, and short as possible. The I/M that you have from the '97 DX WILL have more sensors, since the biggest differance between OBD1 and OBDII is the more amount of sensors that OBDII has. Your taking a big step backwards if you want to change your car from OBDI to OBDII not to mention the conversion will be more trouble than it's worth and won't work right unless you get EVERY SINGLE sensor connected and hooked up just right. Your better off getting an A6 or Y8 (EX) I/M. Better design and more power gain from it.

what I was going to do was to switch the throttle bodies. Mine has like only 1 sensor where as the newer throttle body has like 3. This sounds sad but I want economy not power. I am pissed here cuz my civic is acting gay! yesterday I was driving and my speedometer was jumping all over the place, and on an auto tranny, when you're crusing in 4th gear, it'll lock into lower rpms. My moms camry does it, my explorer does it and my civic does it. but when the speedo is jumping around, the tranny revs higher and doesnt lock into 4th gear for those lower rpms.... Is my computer going bad or something?

Sounds more like maybe your tranny itself is going bad. I'd have it checked out.
