Butane/Gasoline 1991 Trooper
Hi:
It may sound a bit crazy but I converted my 1991 Trooper to use Butane or Gasoline (only 1 type is used at a time, I use a switch). I normally run it on Butane because its about 50% cheaper and have been doing so for more than an year. I haven't seen any mention of something similar on the forum and I would appreciate if someone knowledgeable on the subject can give me a hand with my problem or can direct me to a site that may have something relevant. Problem: When the engine is cold, it takes two tries (cranks) to start the engine. It doesn't do it if the engine is hot or if I start the engine 15 to 20 minutes after having shut down the engine. The reason why I ask is because my father-in-law has a trooper that is the same year and make as mine but its engine starts on the first try. Specs: 2.6 L, 4 Cyl, manual transmission Would really appreciate any suggestions. |

Re: Butane/Gasoline 1991 Trooper
My guess is that the butane has trouble igniting inside a cold combustion chamber (ie cold engine). Next time its running, switch to gas about a minute before you turn it off and see if that helps. Either way 2 cranks is not bad at all.
BTW, how much work (and $) was the butane conversion? I've also heard of people converting their engines to steam power, which can burn old crankcase oil (should be free from a garage). Interesting ideas now that gas costs as much as milk! |

Re: Butane/Gasoline 1991 Trooper
It costs about $750 US dollars. That includes labor, tank, and other accessories required. All of these takes about half a day to be done.
