99 metro pops out of 5th gear

I have a 99 metro it only has 38,000 miles on it,mostly highway. The first 4 gears work great just like when it was new.My problem is it won't stay in 5th.I still drive it sometimes I just don't use 5th and try not go over 55 or 60 in 4th.I took it to a shop and they told me I would need a new tranny or find a used one. They didn't actually look at it just talked to me about it.Is there a simple fix I might try before spending hundreds of $$$ for nothing or is it out of synch or going bad and needs replaced.I have read all the posts in this forum pertaining to transmissions but none are exactly like mine and the car has low miles.....thanks

Enless the transmission has been abused, I doubt there is anything seriously wrong. Odds are, the shift linkage needs to be adjusted. Just to let you know, Metro trannys have something I like to call "double overdrive," in that the last two gears are overdrive gears. It's still safe to take on the highway, you just can't run over about 65, and don't expect the mileage to be as good.

Re: 99 metro pops out of 5th gear

My 93's linkage is worn, but I haven't had it pop out of 5th yet (knock on wood). I've done 110 kmh (68 mph) up some hills in 4th, didn't sound like the engine was working had at all. I wouldn't recommend doing that constantly, though.
