Unhappy Loud Popping when engine off!

Yesterday, I turned off the engine, didn't notice any warning lights on, got out and suddenly there was loud popping, like a mini firecracker coming from the front end. It continued for 2 or 3 minutes and then stopped. I checked and there doesn't seem to be any leaks.

The battery was replaced about 2 or 3 mos. ago by dealer. At THAT time, the battery cables had been completely corroded although it had been checked a couple months before (or so they said). The only problem I've had is the ignition seems to be locking more than usual but a quick shaking of the steering wheels remedies that. Although a month ago, it got so stuck, I had to call for help and it took the guy 20 minutes to unlock it. He almost gave up and said it had to be towed in!

I'm not smart with cars :-( I can built a computer but I'm stupid about cars. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Loud Popping when engine off!

how loud? some small ticks are normal on any car when the engine cools down. how rapid is the popping? do you have a A/C? if so its possible the extra water from the A/C is hitting the exhaust pipe, saturn has a fix for it.

when the engine is cold, double check the coolent and oil levels.

also, do me a favor and pop the hood, to see if you can find out the area the sound is coming from.
