Home Built Roofrack
I spent some time looking at roofracks on the internet and I quickly learned that roofracks are damn expensive. My solution was to build my own. Building my own rack allowed me incorporate the features I wanted and it allowed my friend Rich to practice his welding skills.
The rack is approx 60"x40-something". A hi-lift mount is located on the drivers side and the center of the rack drops a couple inches between the stock bars so the spare tire is as low as possilbe. The pictures are from last weekend when we built it, I still need to finish the paint job, add light tabs, and mount it to the X. I'll post more pictures when the rack is completed and mounted. I guess I can say goodbye to parking garages ![]() Total cost thus far is about 50 bucks. ![]() ***If the pictures are not showing up, I'm sorry, they are linked to space on AOL, and AOL SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!***

COOL! I have been thinking about modifying my Surco rack so it sits down between the factory rack so I can get my X in the Garage!

dropping the roof rack
These pictures show how I dropped a Nissan safari rack between the rails. Just a quick and dirty using U bolts and book shelf HD supports running underneath the rails to support the rack. I used hose clamps (covered with black tape) to fasten the rack to the supports.

Nice workman-ship! It does not look home made at all.
My favorite roof rack design was one I saw in a magazine in late 1999 on the Yokohama Geolander Xterra. I think the article was on a baja offroad race. The rack was mounted on top of the stock rack, and looked like it was made out of square aluminum. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I did an internet search but didn't find anything. |

Nice Job. That's a few steel logos of Kargomaster "Safari" short of my rack. At least it doesn't look like an ER stretcher. :alien2:

Thanks for the compliments. I'll get some pictures up once the rack is mounted to my X and loaded with the tire and hi-lift, should be this weekend.
